I have a 55 reg TDCi Mondeo, registered in September 2005. I purchased it in May this year as a "nearly new" with 13,500 miles on it and it was serviced by the (non-Ford) car dealer at purchase. I checked with my local Ford dealer to see if the extra 1,000 miles over and servicing at a non-Ford garage would be ok as far as the warranty was concerned and they said it was ok, no problem.
I am now wondering when I should have it serviced next. Should it be on the anniversary of the first service, i.e. May 2007, or should it be when the car is 2 years old, September 2007 ?
I only do about 8,000 miles a year so the mileage doesn't come into it as I will only have done about 21,500 miles by May 2007 and 24,200 miles by September 2007 anyway.
My first thought was May, but then I thought, well the car won't be 2 years old or have done 25,000 miles then, so things might not get done at the service that would get done nearer 2 years/25,000 miles (e.g. change brake fluid). I will ask at the dealers next time I'm passing, but it just came to me and I was just wondering what backroomers' views/thoughts were on this.
Would it invalidate the 2nd & 3rd years warranty if I left it till September ?

The anniversary of the first service.

I have an almost identical situation to you - same sort of car, same age, same mileage at purchase, only difference being that the service was done by Hertz before it was de-fleeted.
I had the oil changed not long ago as it was nearly 6 months since the date in the service book and I knew that the car had sat unused for about 4 of those, and had then done over 3,500 miles in the seven weeks since I had bought it, and so I felt that it wouldn't do any harm to get some clean oil in there.
My understanding of service intervals is that the gap between services must not exceed one year or 12,500 miles (being the applicable mileage here), whichever comes first.
In your case that means your next service should be done in May 2007, irrespective of mileage.
In my case, I'll hit 25,000 miles long before I get anywhere near the anniversary of the last service :-(

Assuming that it's a 12K miles or 12 months service interval then your next service is due at 25,500 miles or May 2007, whichever is earlier.
If it was mine I'd also have it serviced at a Ford dealer, at least until the warranty has expired.

Because it probably won't be much dearer than anywhere else and it removes the slight possibility of hassle with Ford if a warranty claim is needed. Plus I'd be happier seeing a main dealer stamp in a service history rather than Archway Motors or wherever if I was buying the car.

So you would sooner pay top dollar for a spotty apprentice kick your tyres and change your oil than have it done properly .

No, I would sooner get VFM by using a dealer with all the right tools, diagnostics, training, access to TSBs, warrantied work etc etc etc etc etc etc etc than have a spotty oik at back street motors put the wrong oil in it.
There are many great independants, though on a car of that age still under warranty, main dealer every time.

Come to a Ford dealer around here C!
No matter what car I get or how new it is, I won't let a Ford dealer anywhere near it. Once was enough. I wouldn't pay any extra for a Ford stamp either. But I fully appreciate that's probably the dealers around here that are bad.

I have used three Ford dealers in the last four years Adam, one a biggy near where I used to work was OK, another a small local independant Ford franchise are very good though the last one, another real multi site biggy, are nothing short of excellent. All three are light years ahead of my experiences with three Vauxhall dealers in the SW London area.

Thanks guys, I'll have it done in May then. I'll probably go to the dealer's as I know I'll get the right (5W30) oil in it there and it also makes warranty claims a bit simpler when it's on their books. I'll be doing an interim oil change about November time, because of the short journeys I do. As soon as the 3 year warranty runs out it will be a 6 monthly DIY Itemised and documented service, with items getting checked/replaced at the proper mileage/age or in the case of brake pads & discs and such, when they are worn to just above the minimum limits. I'm not bothered about service book stamps as I intend to either keep the car for several years or change it at 3 years old, depending on the finances at the time.

A sound plan. Whoever buys it from you should be happy.

My old Mondeo was a year old, with 14200 miles up, and had never been serviced. The first owner was Ford UK, and it was sold through a closed to dealer sale. No-one seemed bothered about the mileage, and the car was fine.
