Stiff gear box - CM
When starting up in the morning, the gearbox is stiff engaging 1st gear. It works perfectly going into 2nd and then upto 1st.

After a few minutes there is no problem. Does the gear box have a problem worth worrying about (as this happened on my last car as well) or is this normal?
Re: Stiff gear box - David Withers
If you Search back, you will find postings about gearboxes being filled with the wrong oil and suffering stiff engagement from cold. This sounds a very likely cause of your own problem.

Could your gearbox be designed to take engine oil but be filled with 'normal' gearbox oil? If you are in doubt, tell us the make and model of car and someone here will have the answer.

Its a 530d bought 2nd hand from the dealer and still under warranty
Re: Stiff gear box - David Withers
BMW has used different types of oil in its manual gearboxes, depending on the make of gearbox and model of car. Some used SAE80 gear oil and others used monograde engine oil. More to the point, high performance cars like the E34 530i used Dexron ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and this is also quite likely to be the case with your E39 530d.

Sorry I don't know about the 530d for sure. Perhaps someone else does? If it should be ATF and another type of oil has been used, it is vital for the gearbox to be drained and thoroughly flushed before refilling with ATF.

Whatever the cause, this looks like something for the dealer to sort out at his own expense.

I had this problem too, until I realised that I was not pressing the clutch down all the way.
Re: Stiff gear box - Big Vern
I have noticed this on a number of cars, Reanults, VW's Vauxhalls... it never got bad enough for me to do anything about it, however I will be watching this thread with intrest.
Re: Stiff gear box - Steve G
Seems a common 'feature' on many cars. The worst example i can think of was my 306 GTi-6. First gear was a no-no for a few miles until the gearbox had warmed up.Once warmed-up no problem at all.
Just learned to live with it.
Apparently Ferrari's are just the same.
Would be nice to know the technical reason for this....can it be just cold/wrong oil ?
Re: Stiff gear box - CM
Also on my previous car 325tds (possibly the worst screwed together car I ever had the misfortune of having) it soemtimes had difficulty engaging 5th gear when changing up from near 4th gear red-line
Re: Stiff gear box - Andy Bairsto
Ferrari gearboxes were built and are still built by fiat and over the decades they have had a syncro problem on 1st and 2nd as most high mileage Alfa drivers will tell you about .But a gearbox in a new BMW you should be able to change using only one fingure and any stiffness as described is definite warranty claim
Re: Stiff gear box - Pete
Has anyone experienced this on the Fiat Uno 1.0ie or 1.1ie (92 on) models please ?
Linkages - PDP
I had great difficulty engaging 1st in cold weather in my '93 Golf. The local VW specialist greased the linkages and the improvement was huge. Unfortunately, it has worsened in the 6 months since this was done, though is still much better than it was.
