Now, all things considered - depreciation, fuel costs, servicing, spares/parts, tax, insurance - what's the cheapest car to run that you could buy for £3k to £4k that is actually a car (drives well) and not a tin boxon wheels?

What you do you want to do with it? Cheap does not mean suitable for your needs.

i would be interested in one too - I want a standard car for abit of moterway but mainly 20 mile commute - no kids no dog but seats in back would be nice - Ford Puma???
|
I'm only 20. It's got to cope with motorway and town driving and be adept around country back lanes. I need it to take my stuff to/from uni, and also my friends shopping. But I think I'm ready to give up my Focus for a car that's cheaper to run to achieve this, because it's just costing me a lot of £££ to keep going - especially in petrol (34mpg has become typical over the last few weeks - 33 with a/c).

A half decent Ka or Polo. A Skoda Fabia would be my pick - diesel.

I know I keep going on about them but why not look at the Almera?
You could get yourself a newer N16 version for that type of money. Or alternitvely, save some dosh and go for the N15 (1999 or earlier).
Proper Nissan reliability and very practical. My only complaint is that it's a bit on the small side for all the family for long journeys.
IIRC they start from around 1.4 litre. I don't know what fuel economy's like for that, but you'll be saving in repair and servicing.

Buy the Skoda TDI and then use biodiesel rather than mineral diesel and save even more money !!!

Would recommend anyone considering a non-turbocharged SDI go for a long test drive before commiting to purcase - 60-80 performance is good, but 0-60 takes a lifetime. Can't believe they still offer a Golf with this engine - even the Koreans etc moved on long ago
