HJ Server Problems - Honest John
Sorry. Can't be much use to anyone today as Compuserve has been unstable from Saturday evening. Very frustrating.

Re: HJ Server Problems - Honest John
F*****g Compuserve today. It lets me visit websites. But it won't let me use Outlook to work on my mail or post anything on the site. It may be okay tomorrow, but I've lost one and a half working days which I can't get back.

The joy of computing, HJ. As they say at Microsoft, it's not a fault, it's a feature.
Re: HJ Server Problems - Tom Shaw
On the subject of computer glitches, a brief flirtation with AOL as my ISP recently beggered my operating systym to such an extent that even ME's system restore wouldn't work. I had to re-inatall Windows from scratch and the disc which I use to backup my accounts data on choose that moment to become corrupt and wouldn't restore the data. I've spent most of the last three weeks rummaging through receipts and the like trying to make sense of everything I've done since last April.

Partly my own fault, as I've used the same floppy for backup for at least five years. The CD writer I installed recently won't backup program files without an (expensive) upgrade to the software that came with it. I sometimes get the feeling that someone out there is laughing at us.

Tom,

>>Partly my own fault, as I've used the same floppy for backup for at least five years.

I was all ready with sympathy and help until I got to this bit.

You shouldn't use the same diskette for backups for more than a month.

Re: HJ Server Problems - Tom Shaw
To be honest, I've only actually got two floppy discs anyway. I lost the rest when we moved.
Re: HJ Server Problems - David M
Think of floppies like filters, tyres etc. - to be checked religiouslyover their lifespan, but ultimately disposable.

Re: HJ Server Problems - Flat in Fifth
There is one phrase I use when it comes to backups.

Think paranoid.

Its difficult coordinating data backups across 3 servers in 3 continents plus local backups in case of "temporary" difficulty, but it don't half bring peace of mind.

Like Mark I used to get colleagues coming up in a blind panic, this file won't open, this directory is corrupt bla bla bla. When you ask how long since your last backup and you get a blank look it is difficult not to be smug.

Re: HJ Server Problems - markymarkn
Floppy discs are dead. They're just to unreliable.

Zip drives are really good for backing up onto. Solidly built discs, fairly unsusceptable to corruption, and much faster than a CDR.

The disks are a bit pricey at about 10 quid each for 100mb, but they last for ages.

Re: HJ Server Problems - David W
Mark,

Ditto with Zip the medium of choice here. I mail order the 100mb discs for about £6/£7.

Tom I'm not trying to wind you up but how on earth can you backup to *a* floppy. Perhaps you've only a few letters?

My backups are on three Zip discs, they have the same capacity as about 200 floppys, and they're nearly all full.

David
Re: HJ Server Problems - Tom Shaw
One years accounts data will easily fit on a floppy, David. I'm only a driving instructor, not ICI. :-). As for letters, there easier to retrieve if I print off two copies and store one.

I was actually considering a zip drive but choose a CDRW instead. Trouble is, as stated earlier I can't get it to back up data without additional software. Great for making music CD's though.

Tom,

Why not search the Internet for Freeware/Shareware downloads of the program type you need?

Re: What I backup. I do everything that isn't on the PC recovery CD or on the CDs for my extra programs. Just one item for example is the whole content of Outlook Express, mails in/out and settings etc. This alone would take over 30 floppys.

David
Re: Backup. - Mark (Brazil)
Tom,

Mail me the details (exact) of your CD drive and the software you have at the moment. I guarantee that somewhere I have the software you need which either you can download or I`ll drop on a CD and send to you.

Re: Connection - Honest John
The whole thing was very strange. One Compuserve guy analysed that it was either my modem or my line, but didn't suggest that I tried another line. I did. It didn't work and something strange came up on it, so I called Comopuserve again on the other line (previously the IT line) and he suggested I reboot. I did and it sort of works again. Drops connections occasionally. but not all the time. I'll find out what it does now when I try to post this. These are the disadvantages of being a one-man band.

Re: Connection - Honest John
Have now stayed conencted for 30 minutes, so maybe the problem is over. It's more serious than you guys might think. I've got no money to fix anything.

Re: Connection - Tomo
HJ, I have every sympathy, but little help.

Somebody put a Freeserve CD through my letter-box, and I signed to Anytime. Fine (except at kiddywinky time when all goes gearbox-greasy) but now I want to put Compuserve back to pay per use instead of flat rate (no way can I ditch them totally because of miscellaneous people who have my Compuserve address, some of them for SWMBO, and whom I can't hope to remember) and the box to do this goes "page not available". There was no notion of this when I wanted to do it the other way!

Now, if there had been nothing but the Lagonda Z type box which gave a lightning change but most could not manage, I'd have been happy - in hindsight, exceedingly happy! But we had to have synchromesh and automatic and God knows what to make driving accessible to the vast unwashed correction majority with no aptitude, thereby contributing to the wrecking of motoring; why can't we have a similar process, to make things easy for you and me, in repect of computer things?

Is Bill Gates rich, but useless?

Regards, Tomo
Re: HJ Server Problems - Kevin

John

you have my utmost sympathy.

I am currently in the process of getting my laptop back to where it was before some kind soul installed another ISP's software when I left the machine unattended for a few hours.

It screwed all my file/application associations, installed DLL's that stop existing applications working and is proving almost impossible to get rid of because of the damn registry entries it added.

Re: HJ Server Problems - The Growler
I don't know if this offering makes any sense to anyone but me, but I use pre-paid internet and at any one time have the choice of 5-6 ISP's, so if one lets me down there's plenty more. Any local corner store carries a wide selection of different cards. (depending on time of day usage) I get up to 18 hours on-line with any of 'em for about 4 quid.
Re: HJ Server Problems - Mark (Brazil)
Makes a ton of sense to me.........

How does it work ?

Different telephone numbers, what about usernames/passwords ? How much setting up is required for a new/different card ?

And anything else which springs to your mind.

Re: HJ Server Problems - Guy Lacey
I've got 3 ISP's to chose from - AT&T, ic24 (crap) and freeserve. All of them pay as you go.

Simply chose which connection to use from the account menu. You can even collect all your different e-mail accounts from one connection - I pick up my ic24 (when it's working) and freeserve mail all through one connection. All you need is the pop3 account details and you can collect from wherever.
Re: HJ Server Problems - lada riva owner.
we have ic24 and freeserve, we only keep ic24 for our web address, as ic24 is too slow, but freeserve seem to be ok, a bit slow at times usually at about 10pm.
Re: HJ Server Problems - Jonathan
