I intend towing a caravan with my Mazda6 estate 2.0i auto (it is the earlier 4 speed)
I understand I need to fit a fluid cooler to the gearbox - I cannot see one in the engine bay I only assume it has the standard bottom of the radiator job.
I know Kenlowe do these additional coolers, are there any other manufacturers/suppliers that I should look at ?
Do these come with a thermostat and/or electric fan ?
Does the fluid still use the cooler through the bottom of the radiator or is this now bypassed and only the additional cooler used ?
Any idea where thie cooler should be fitted ?
There is not much space in the engine bay, only obvious place is in front of the radiator behind the grille - presumably some kind of special bracket to hold it would be required as well.
If there is anything else I should take into account then please let me know !!!

My experience, all be it with a Vauxhall, was that the original oil cooler pipes were bypassed and a cooler fitted infront of the radiator.
Their helpline is excellent and they will give you all the answers you want
Kenlowe will have a proper fitting kit and full instructions to do the job properly. Any other product if not fitted right could cause problems and how much would a replacement box cost if you lunched yours?

I looked into fitting an additional cooler to mine. They are fitted 'in series' with the existing cooler so one of the existing cooler pipes is disconnected and the new cooler fitted in the gap. The new cooler is fitted, where possible, to the existing radiator. They provide plastic fasteners which go through the cooling fins of the cooler and radiator. I didn't fit one in the end after checking with the manufacturer (Honda) who advised that it didn't need one.

Kenlowe will be expensive - and I doubt they make their own coolers.
In the past I have fitted transmission coolers to people's cars. You don't want to over-cool (as bad as over-heating).
For a normal road car a Mocal 12-row x 235mm cooler will be fine. Then you need hoses and fittings. Mocal also do cooler mounting brackets. Normally the cooler is mounted below the exisiting rad/condensor arrangement - depends on the car to some extend.
A cooler and hoses + clips will cost around £60. Most of the fitting time will be taken up mounting the cooler and possibly removing bumper - connection to the transmission is very straightforward. I would say 1-3 hours depending on how much of front has to be messed about with. It would be an easy DIY job.
Mocal coolers are sold by many race parts suppliers - probably best known is Demon Tweeks (www.demon-tweeks.co.uk).
Remember to change your fluid regularly!

The cooler is located BEFORE the radiator/condensor and the pipe is connected AFTER the heat exchanger (bottom of radiator), thus increasing the the size of the closed loop. Seems to have helped as the ATF is now still as clean as the day it went int.
