Lame excuse!!! - Sofa Spud
In our local paper is a report of a man who has been fined for overtaking on double white lines.

In his written defence, apparently, he said the road was safe for overtaking and the car in front was being driven by an elderly female driver who braked a lot.

Where to we stand legally if we need to overtake a cyclist or a motorised wheelchair?

As a cyclist, if you see the way is clear, go for it. Far prefer you get booked than try to squeeze past in the same lane about 2 inches from me. If lots of people overtake like that you'll usually find me in the middle of the lane making people overtake properly, double white lines or not.

Funnily enough I got asked this in my driving test back in 1977 ! The correct answer then was it is okay provided you do not cross the white lines during your overtaking manoevre.

I can't find the quote in my avalanche of Saturday reading but I thought that the road was straight, level and clear for over a mile ahead and so the chap overtook and was booked. If it really was as described the presence of double white lines seems odd but stranger things have happened in the wacky world of traffic engineering! Near Peterborough there is a national 2 lane road with a national 60 mph limit which then goes round a roundabout onto a dual carriageway with a 40 limit!

108: Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph or less.

Double white lines mean no overtaking.

How on earth can he complain if he did and was caught; whatever the reason.

You don't have to agree to the rules of the road and road markings etc; but if you don't obey them them the driving standard in this country which is poor anyway will get even worse!

Road in question has numerous stretches of straight double dips capable of hiding double deck buses which is why the double whites are there. LA do not have surplus quantity of white lining to use up.

Happy motoring ( Look out for the oncoming idiot with Xray vision.)
