Hello all, well after over 9yrs of mainly driving 306DT's I sold the old girl and picked up a nice family car....Impreza Turbo Estate....UK car, nice and tidy.......early Mk1 (1996)

I'm planning to do a gas lpg conversion on it, basically fit the kit myself, then take her for a tune and certificate...I'm just putting the feelers out to see if anyone else had lpg'd a scooby and could recommend which kit..I have heard about the Dream 21........

Many thanks

Out of interest, which model/engine size Scooby have you bought and what is the current fuel consumption, that you feel the need to convert to LPG ????

Hi there, she is a 1996 'N' reg 1994cc Turbo estate....I get about 22/23mpg tops on good runs...averaging I think around the 18/20mpg mark.

I can get the full LPG kit for approx £800 (all in)..I worked it out like this:

10000miles per year...approx 250miles per tank, thats approx 40 fills a year.....call it £45 per tank.....£1800 per year.....cost of LPG hovering around 39.9 to 46.0p/litre depends where you go......the conversation should pay for it self within 1 year.....(then maybe....1 year to 18months sell the scooby...with the certified gas kit she will sell, then pick up a new model.....gas her etc, etc.....)

I plan to do the conversation myself, then get it certified....giving myself a good weekend to fire it in...basically I have seen two kits on the market...Dream 21N and Bigas, both have pro ands cons, and of course both suppliers say theirs is better.

If my conversation goes well (which I have no reason to think other wise) I have about 3 people lined up waiting for me to 'help'/do conversations for.....the old man, the brother law and a mate a work (who is currently running an VR6 LPG..)

Thanks for your info, I must say that 18 to 20 mpg average is pretty horrendous. I knew Scoobys were hot on fuel but did`nt realise they were that bad. I hope your CONVERSION (not conversation) goes well and perhaps you could let us know how long you take to recoup your money.

Probably a silly question.

But why buy a imprezza if you are after fuel economy and slower driving?

Is this a UK version or an Import ??

In either case you may have to have a remap, if its an Import then you're in trouble. It can be done, but at a cost. They add a add on chip and remap that. If it was 99- model then the existing ECU can be remapped.

Your best bet would be to join :- bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/
and ask the same question again. You'll get more expert advice on that site more for Scoobies.

Personally I think its a no go as these engines are fussy, if you do something wrong you'll blow it.

Good Luck

Thanks for the comments..

I plan to use a V-SGi full sequential gas injection system, controlled by the vehicles original injection Ecu..

From what I have heard, these engine convert easy to lpg (thats from scooby themselves)

Robcars****comment about speed and fuel....I love the scooby, always have, my old boy has a 1996 Mcrae model and a 1999 RB5....I did not say I was after economy or slow driving. I wanted a scooby, love the power, love the looks, not to hot on the fuel cost..hence lpg.....my wife drives an A4 tdi..so we use that for long hall.....I just fancy converting a car to lpg and it might as well be mine..

Will let you all know when she is done......

Dude P.......scoobys are very thristy...forget what is printed in the ParkerGuide etc...my brother in law works for Subaru....18 to 20 is pretty normal....but running on lpg...well, it makes her as efficient as a TD....but with over 200BHP (buying a good secondhand Tdi costs a lot more than what I'm doing)...

All..Keep Safe and have fun..I'm off to Ebay to try and pick up a cheap motorbike as I have just sold my CBR600.....and alreay missing her... :-(

forgot...full UK model.....took me quite some time find one to...
Impreza 2.0Turbo Lpg - Ian G
Being pedantic here, sorry. It won't make it as "efficient" as a TDi, but will merely allow a comparable mileage for a comparable cost of fuel.

I.e. the engine uses more fuel, but fuel is cheaper.

Having said that, I too like the characterists of a turbo'd petrol engine.

True, TDIs do often have similarly high torque figures, but the revs run out too quick for me.

yes Ian you are correct, she will still eat the fuel...18ish mpg, but because the fuel is current less than half price, that equates to approx 40mpg......I honestly do not think the gov will raise tax of lpg for a couple of yrs....and even it it does go up, it has a long way to go before it tops 90p/lt. I current can comfortably afford to run the scooby on petrol, but just because I can afford to, it does not mean I want to. Coupled with t he fact I really want to gas convert car for the fun of it.
