It's the wifes 50th coming up. Rather than trade her in for a new model, I decided to buy HER a new model! I know, what a nice guy.
I want to spend about £5k to rid her of her ratty old "Y" reg' Clio. She isn't the sort who has fluffy animals on the dash and enjoys driving.
However, economy is quite important. What good quality 3 door hatch' can I get her for £5k +about £1500 trade in. (looking at late'ish 2nd hand of course, not new.)
|
Fabia ? I know it's VAG (see V/W thread) but mother's has been faultless and can be pushed quite nicely along.
|
I also understand the dealers know how to treat the paying punter as well. They score very highly in the customer satisafction surveys.
|
Avoid the 1.4 Classic, go for a 16v or a diesel.
|
Come on - your wife is 50. She does not want to be presented with a car more suitable for a 65 year old.

How about a Toyota Aygo.
Not sure what else you can get for the £6.5K price range.
|
Give her some street cred as well - get a C2!!

Facelift for the Clio. Nice skirts, a bit of a spoiler, some go faster stripes and that'll give her the 'street cred' suggested.
|
What model/engine is the Y plate Clio?
|
Don't be so tight! Get her an Alfa Spyder!
|
Eschew modernism, go for a nice chrome bumpered MG.
|
How about a Seat Leon?
Plenty advertised and in the right price bracket:

Fiat Coupe or Barchetta (in fact one of each for your budget, that way she can drive one when the other is off the road). Alfa 147 or 156 JTD?
BMW 325 TDS?
Mazda MX5?

Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ...

Ah ! An MG with a hatch !

Check the thread on the Suzuki Swift out. Nice car.

Not many "good quality three-door hatches" models there...:-)

Opps, totally forgot about that part, looked at the budget only. I blame the entertainment I had last night, whose effects have still not quite worn off ... 8-)
Ah well, the 147 still stands (subject to your view of Alfas) and substitute the 325 TDS for a Compact.
I would suggest an Almera diesel but I somehow feel there's a need for something a bit more stylish.

Nothing too flash, and expecially black or metalic blue.
a friend of a friend bought his wife nice ford fiesta zetec, 2dr black - she looked good in it with her now blonde her, black clothes - compliments were paid and she began getting a bit slimmer and buying new clothes/etc - next thing, vroooommmmmmmmmmmm, she left home for a younger guy
:(
Not saying it will happen to you - but buy her a Ford Focus, 2 door in silver, the LX version, VFM

What model/engine is the Clio?
It's a 1.2 sport 16valve, 3 door, doom blue

A great 1st car, worth a lot more than £1500, as much as double that.

Toyota Yaris - make sure you get the 1.3 and she'll love it. Elder daughter's was faultless, and great fun to drive, over 2 years and 32,000 miles: we have just got a good deal on a new one. There are more 5-door ones around, but if it's important to her to have a 3-door there should be some.
Another thought - you could get a new Ford Ka for less than your budget. They too are a hoot to drive. It depends what you are looking for when you say 'quality' - the Ka is basic but well put together.
If you want a feeling of solidity, try a VW Polo. There is a lot of very boring VW-bashing on this forum at the moment: the truth of it is that you want to find a good VW dealer. But you know this already with the Clio.
I have had no trouble at all with either Renaults or VWs/Audis, but there is a higher proportion of good Toyota dealers, and Japanese cars seem less vulnerable to poor servicing and repairs.

These were the ones on my list (same as some of yours)
C2
Aygo
Yaris
(I know Skoda are good, but I WANT to stay married)
MX5? not sure she can get out of one with dignity intact

Suzuki Swift or for a bit less money, Kia Picanto.

>>(I know Skoda are good, but I WANT to stay married)>>
Surely your good lady is still not stuck in the past?
She must have heard by now just how good modern Skoda models prove?
You are one of the few blokes I've heard about of your age, by the way, who WANT to stay married...:-)

Well, have been married 3 years.....and she is younger than me, so it tells you something.
Thanks for all the suggestions, but in the end I got her a very nice low mileage, ex-demo Colt 3 door with aircon. She loved it and I loved the price! I know it is only a 3 cylinder, but instead of sounding like a yappy terrier, it sounded like a Rotweiller when you put your foot down. Nice equipment (the car....and the wife!)

It will be, if he's a rover, whether city or range....
Sorry Tack - only joking. Good luck with the frisky Colt - we didn't think of that one! Quite like a Jazz but probably has a younger image.

£200 is a lot for a handbag though a £200 handbag may have far more value than a £5000 car in a woman's eyes.

I bought my wife a Honda for her 50th.
It starts first time and makes a really good job of mowing the lawn.

well, I am taking her away for a week as well. The car is for starters, the holiday is main course. Let's see what she gets for pudding!

Just in cae my husband is reading this and is looking for ideas - I will have the MX-5 for when I do not have children, dog, him in tow!!! ;~) voooom!!
|
Now there'a a thought....are there any husbands and wives, or partners, who are each on this forum under pseudonyms, without the other knowing it?
We shall, of course, never know the answer to that.

Well i see Nicole is signed up on here somewhere.
And of course Fifi the faithful RF hound has her paw print somewhere. (she is the one who makes all the typos - I do wish she wouldn't use my id - it makes me look bad)
