I used to like the (cloverleaf?) alloys on the mark 3 Escort XR3i, really suited the car. Modern ones I like are Leon Cupra alloys.

Alfa GTA teledials.
Blade alloys from the original Volvo 850 T5-R, these ones nearly got canned by the marketing boys at Volvo as they thought they might be going too far on their re-imaging of Volvo. The car was only available (at first) in Banana Yellow lads, I think you were too late ;)

Any BBS cross spoke alloys - particularly the 3 part split rims with the gold spokes and chrome rims......on a Porsche!

Worst - the Ford Probe walnut whip style alloys

The original Pirelli patterned alloys on the MK1 Golf. Simple understated perfection, closely followed by the MK2 Astrs GTE (OZ made wheels) and of course the BMW R1200GS' alloys - chunky and incredibly pretty.

I agree, which the Sierra Cosworth and the similar and smaller XR3 one's mentioned above are most certainly not.
That's why I rate the latest Passat sports 'monaco' wheels.

Simple ones look best, ones that don't clash with the circular functionality of the wheel! The VW and audi wide-spoke designs look quite good.

I love the metric 390mm diameter TRX alloys on my 1982 Granada, lots of oblong holes around the outside and a bold centre cap in the middle of the bright chrome wheelnuts! Simple but quite timeless design (still look quite contemporary in a way). Only nuisance is the metric tyres aren't cheap and it's not so easy getting the brakedust out of the holes!

Interesting how my suggestions were all contemporary though many people have gone for older designs, it is true that some of the earlier alloys, i.e. Borranis on 70's Ferraris etc looked great. By the way the late XR3i wheel looked rather like the Cosworth wheel though side by side was actually quite different, I do like the late model Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 wheels.
PU mentions the R1200GS wheels, as with any new love affair he he is clearly still infatuated and is looking through rose tinted specs ;-)
I could mention the OZ Racing HL02 wheels that I had on my ZX7R, beautiful though they need to be at over £1200 a pair!

Hang on , hasn't the R1200GS got spoked wire wheels?
Showing my age here- Woolferace wheels were the thing to have on your Custom Car in the early 70's.
BBS- you can keep them- were a real pain to clean on my G60 with those litle pseudo spokes.

Alloys are std on the R1200GS wire wheels are optional and more suited to off-roading. Just noticed today, when I was admring it that the rear axle is hollow, you can see through it straight to the other side, must be about 75mm in diameter....how cool is that ?

Minilites always looked good on anything - I used to wish I cd afford to get some for my Skodas. Relatively easy to clean too I wd think.
Can you still get them?

Come to think of it the Skoda Favorit came, in this country anyway, with rather nice 5-spoke (I think) alloys.

On the other hand these modern high-end split-rim jobs with about 200 crossed spokes and about 200 gold nuts or bolts or screws all round the rim look as if you'd need a lackey for each wheel to keep them sparkling and uncorroded. Stupid looking things.

Thanks for the info - most R1200GS I'd seen had the wires.
My R1150R has fairly good looking wheeels but some bits are pretty difficult to clean. I use Autoglym bike cleaner which helps a lot.

Horrid! What!! an atractive and modern variation of the classic RS alloys from the 70's and extremely easy to clean too...
One of my fav's.... suits the Fiesta to a tee.

I've always liked the Focus ST170 alloys, the Mondeo ST220 alloys are nice too (the same but 18").
The optional 18" BBS alloys on the new mini look really nice.
