Witnessed what appeared to be a police chase on the M8 today. Two marked Volvo Estates with lights blazing chasing an unmarked Sierra or Mondeo I think. OK it wasn't at peak hours (11am) but road still busy.
My "Insider" later told me that it was actually a police training exercise.
Now when I originally saw it, I was thinking to myself, maybe if I was driving an HGV or something and saw this happening, I would maybe use my vehicle to block the car or even barge it off the road to do my bit for the police!
Wonder if these training exercises have ever been brought to a halt by something like this? OK, I suppose that even the lead car was "training" in that driver having to look out for things like vehicles pulling out, but, stilll the same, it could have ended up with very bad consequences if any members of the public had decided to help out!

Police/camera/action a couple of nights ago on one of the channels: very excellent high-speed run through familiar London canyons in a jam-sandwich Rover SD1, shot perhaps from another on its tail, with at least one motorcycle outrider, carrying a rapidly-cooling liver for a charming Arab lady, later interviewed after watching the same film. Didn't see where the liver had come from - road crash perhaps? Anyway a long demo of fabulous fuzz urban speed aided only by blues and twos, some civilians managing as they always do to get in the way.
Of course Rover SD 1 means years ago, but conditions very recognisable. Averaged 60mph (they said) from wherever to the very depths of central smoke.
Normally don't think that much of P/C/A although it's a bit better than the American one which is so awful it's compulsive viewing.

I remember seeing the Police/Camera/Action one the first time round, and I remember thinking why the hell didn't they use a helicopter?
I seem to recall the brakes on the police car were burnt out by the time they reached their destination.
|
Yup. They mentioned the smell of brakes. When you can smell your brakes and/or clutch you know you're doing some serious urban speed. Of course you can't do it much in your own car.

watching police camera etc.. on tuesday night, there was an old bedford van in a high speed chase - 65-70mph flat out. In the end an old W-reg (ie XXX 123W type) range rover seemed to barge him into a lamppost. they had to call for support from the video-equipped car!!

They showed that again? It was only on a couple of weeks ago!

I seem to recall that we had a good post about this, Adam, if you are talking about the dash across London...

See the link - it was actually 2 months ago.
Or do you mean the 'low-speed' high speed chase? Even though I was around in 1990 (only 11, mind) it seems like a different world...

Good man for finding it!
Two months? It only seems like last week!
The sad thing is, I'd probably have watched it again if I'd known! I would have been 5 in 1990 but I must have paid attention a lot more as a kid because I remember seeing those cars (such as the Senator A when they were new/nearly new!
There was a fully marked Escort in that van chase as well wasn't there? I remember catching a glimpse of it. No idea what Mk it was other than I think it was brought in around E/F reg.
Blasts from the past!

the recognisable ones were:
range rover mk1
sierra mk 1 estate
rover 800 saloon
+ one other, possibly a v old cavalier?
It was certainly a different era, 'flying' down the motorway past everything at ... 68mph!! I travelled faster than that on the way to work!!

That other one was the Senator A I think Phil - if we're on about the van chase on the M25 that is.
The Sierra estate though! Not seen one of them (even a non Police one!) in a long long time!

I know where there is a rather nice (for a sierra) 2.8 V6 Turbo Technics Sierra Estate.
Most definately a Q car!

I was thinking of the senator..
its the mondeo estate now... autotrader has 8 sierra estates available..
see www.dreamtargets.com/billygas02.htm for some icons of the past..., see your focus' parents, grand-parents and great grand parents ;-)

The one sad thing about this - if I am reading it correctly - is that people have been watch Police, Camera, Action on Men and Motors.
The service has just ceased on Freeview and is being replaced by yet another quiz show (ITV Play).
Despite numerous petitions ITV has completely ignored the big following M and M has on Freeview - money always talks...:-(

Yes, I know. Members of the "Minder" forum have also been complaining about the loss of M&M on Freeview. Lot's of people are very disappointed by this action.
However, it is still available on Freesat.

That website is great Phil!
Regarding Men and Motors - I haven't checked yet but apparently the scedule during the day has changed hasn't it?

That's curious, I saw the same thing on the M9 around 9:50 yesterday too. A Mondeo being "boxed in" along the hard shoulder by three police Volvos followed by another Volvo maintaining a rolling roadblock some distance behind.
|
Suppose that backs up the fact that it was a training exercise then! I believe when I saw it (Eastbound at Livingston) this was it on the way back as it had previously travelled westbound at approx 10.30!
