Hi everyone,
I'd appreciate any comments people have on the following.
My Mazda 323 (2003 1.6 GSi petrol manual) has reached 3yrs old with 36000 miles on the clock. It has this morning failed its first MOT, done at an independent garage, because the front brake discs are "shot to pieces". I'm happy that the MOT people are telling the truth and I'm getting them replaced. Fair enough.
However, the car had its 36000 Mazda dealer service just 2-3 weeks ago.
So two questions arise:
1) Surely the Mazda dealer should have warned me about this and not passed the car for its service? Why am I paying £250 for a service that doesn't do anything?
2) Is 36000 miles in 3yrs a fair lifetime for front discs? (The car is under its 3yr warranty until the end of this month, although the brake repairs are being done by an independent garage which may spoil things for me.)
The twist in the tale is that I can't go back to the Mazda dealer, because they closed four days after I had the service done. So any complaint I have can now only be with Mazda themselves.
Any comments appreciated. I'm not out for every penny I can get, but I feel I've wasted money on main dealer servicing!
Thanks,
Sam

Exactly the same as my DiL with her 3 yr old 35,000 mile Mini. Serviced 6 weeks b4 the MoT and it failed the MoT @ a local independent due to disks and handbrake not being up to spec.
The BMW garage said that it was fair wear & tear and the previous service was only an oil change and did not cover inspecting the car. The brake piston had seized and the disk corroded and the braking efficiency was compensated for by the ABS so the driver was unaware of the fault.
At roughly the same time another son had to replace pads and disks on a 18mth old Audi TT - again corroded disks - not covered by warranty.
My local Independent said that his team carry out a visual inspection with all services of items that include disks & pads - even a modest interim (oil change) type service.
Maybe your Mazda dealer going out of business says volumes about their service in general.
Question - did you pay the service by Credit Card? If so the Credit Card Company has to recompense you if the goods(&service) are faulty. If you paid by cash/cheque or debit card this does not apply.

If the staff new that they were closing down they would not give a deleted . Get a claim into Mazda.

To be honest 36k could well be a satisfactory life for brake discs used in an urban or sub-urban environment.
Sounds like the mechanic didn't check them though....

Closed down 4 days later? I would worry if they even bothered to change the oil.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll get a claim into Mazda for the servicing. I think the brakes are par for the course, but it looks like anything that the service people said they did can't be trusted.
Yeah, it was the main Mazda dealer in town here. They've closed, and currently there's no local Mazda franchise, although I've heard one of the other dealers is taking it on.

SWMBOs Mazda 323F 2001 vintage had new front discs and pads for £60 fitted by reliable back street mechanic as part of the last MOT.
A lot cheaper than VW.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

your brake pads must of had less than 1.5mm of pad left two weeks ago otherwise it would of been ok.
