I have the latest Espace and in an effort to avoid the dealers am going to attempt an oil change myself.
Can anyone tell me how much oil it takes and who would sell me an oil filter, gsf don't seem to do one. Any other tips?

Buy an oil filter from the Renault dealer. It won't cost much more and will do the job properly. Oil capacity should be in the manual.
|
Yes, check the manual.
However, you can find out the oil capacity (and other fluids) of any car here:
tinyurl.com/hrokc
if you go to Tools and Which Oil Should I Use.
I was about to say that I trust that Castrol have checked the numbers carefully, but I find that they are out by 0.5L on my Golf VR6 (and I have told them).
Filters are so cheap that it's hardly worth buying from anywhere but the dealer and knowing that it's the real McCoy.

Roger thats an excellent link thanks very much.
"Laguna II, Espace IV, Vel Satis: B4A3 5W-40 sole recomendation"
I bought 8l of 0W-40W Mobil 1 from Costco so I will have to reconsider the oil I use I suppose. Or is this a ploy by Castrol to get you to buy their oil.

If your car is new and has few miles on it, beware of using Mobil 1 just yet. Check out HJ's FAQs 6 and 8 about letting the engine bed in properly first.
On the job itself, do it hot and watch out for oil drifting in the wind on a breezy day. Spread plenty of newspaper or a large sheet under the whole front of the car.
I've heard from Castrol, who say:
* They get the info from another company.
* Check the manual.
* Rely on the dipstick.

Thanks again Roger, my MPV has 23k on it so I think I will give the Mobil 1 a go, if its good enough for BMW it should be OK for Reanult.

It's Castrol's website - they're hardly going to list everyone else's oil!
|
Yup, Mobil 1 is a good thing. I use it in two cars, having been alerted to it by HJ's article a decade ago on the million-mile Mobil 1 BMW that showed little sign of stress or wear. I heed the expert advice that recommends staying with synthetic once used and not reverting to semi-synth or mineral oil at any stage.
And don't forget in future that Kwik-Fit will do you a Mobil 1 oil change for £39.95 (including filter), regardless of quantity.

I will check kwik fits website for details that sounds a good price, thanks for the tip.
|
Having spoken to my two local kwik fits after ringing a number of times I think I will do it myself, as at least I have an 'O' level or two.
|
Craig
That's a bit cryptic. Did they deny all knowledge or what?
|
Craig, I take it car is out of warranty?
|
First 3 calls to various Kwik Fits were ignored. The I got an apologetic trainee who couldn't help me. Next call got a bloke who couldn't get me off the phone "kwik" enough and virtually slammed the phone down mid conversation. Next garage was a bit clueless about the latest Espace and I simply requested they get a filter in stock for when I arrive so I dont have to return or hang around for an age, this was a bit confusing to him and I was promised a call back. Perhaps he will one day when I am pushing up daisies. /rant off.
I sort of expected this the staff are probably underpaid and overworked so a tight git like me wanting a dirt cheap oil change is not going to be top of their list, and having had the engine tray ripped off my Passat at a similar national tyre outlet I will do it myself. The 40 quid deal is still on and its Mobil1.
Yes the Espace is out of warranty as its a import from Cyprus. I think the average service is going to cost me £250, and I plan to keep the car for about 5 years. When something breaks I have access to the latest Dialogsys Renault software and the web of course.
|
Thanks for that. I guess I'm lucky: I just walk 200m to my local Kwik-Fit and alert them to the need to order a filter; they look it up in their reference book, and that's it. The Mobil oil change is a standard nationwide Kwik-Fit service, I believe, although I can't find it on their website.

Roger I guess its just a matter of turning up and asking for the service, I might give it a try next week in person. Thanks for all your help with this.
