Hello there,
i know this forum is about cars, but i really need to get this blade going, so help is really appreciated.
I have a 1995 (M) Honda fireblade 893cc, it has a manual choke,
due to the recent cold weather we have had, i have had no time to ride it! I cane to start it yesterday, (it's had a new battery) and it would just turn over and backfire. The choke is fully out and i have checked the new battery, it is able to start a 2003 blackbird i have, so there are no problems with it.
I think that moisture has probably got into the engine. I was wondering if there was any way that it will start without strippin the thing down and replacing the plugs??
any help is appreciated
THANKS
DAN

reason I bought a Honda bike was on the strenth of a close friend who runs a dealership who tells me that he has never seen a honda engine that needed to be stripped down! I know that's not what you meant, but I'd check da obvious stuff 1st. For eg how old is the fuel in the tank? Or how long is it since you last ran it?

There is a very excellent bike specific forum I go to. I've been recommending the people on there who have car issues to here, so i hope that there will be no prob if I say to you just put visordown into google & go from there. The board you wnat is called 'workshop' & it is customary for 1st time posters to offer to get the virtual drinks in. The general board is rather like a kiddies playground & all manners of ego's lurk there, but workshop & survival skills have top people on them.

If the engine has not been run for more than 2 months, drain the fuel system and try again with fresh fuel before you delve too deeply. I've had many a Honda bike engine apart for various reasons, but poor starting is not usually one of their failings.

My CBR100F was fired up last saturday, first time since october, and it ran adream with the fuel it was put away with.
Strongly suspect that it's been flooded.

Fully agree....drain the carb float chambers, put some fresh fuel in and replace the plugs. Should do the trick.

My 1992 Revere is usually a bit reluctant to start after not being used over the winter. I find that choke fully out, and then (gently) closing the throttle right off with the twistgrip, then turn the engine over will do the trick. It's as though the butterflies aren't fully closed when the throttle is on its normal stop position. After it starts, I have no more problems with it, it's only after a long lay off. This year though, I did flatten the battery and had to put it on charge. Other than that, concur with the comments about fuel - you could also try the old trick of taking the plugs off and warming them before putting them back in the bike and trying again. Don't know how accessible the plugs on a Fireblade are though!

Hi There,
just a few notes, the fuel was new about 2 weeks ago (that was when i was going to try to start it) so i strongly suspect that the fuel is "old."
I will change the plugs, do i need to change anything else?

Fresh fuel and a quick spray of quick start and a blast of hot air from a hair drier when you hit the go button and she will fire up no probs. Regards Peter

Damp in the killswitch? Strip and clean all the electrical connector blocks, check fuses (especially the leads going into the fusebox), battery fully charged, etc. My last bike needed 100 yard tow, bump starting, behind the brother in law's Astra before it would run properly in the spring, not recommended.

As suggested elsewhere, you must drain the float chambers.

Here's a top tip for you:

When putting your bike away after a ride, turn the fuel tap to off and then let it run dry. This way there's no fuel sitting in the carbs, gumming them up. I used to have trouble starting mine, but adopting this approach as resolved the problem.

With most modern bikes you can't do that;they either have fuel injection or,like mine, depression in the inlet manifold turns on the fuel-the tap has 3 positions-fuel on when engine starts, reserve and prime-no OFF.

How about the side stand. Does it have a microswitch interlocked to the ignition system? May have failed open/closed.
Modern unleaded does deteriorate pretty fast BTW.

A four carb bike engine is easily flooded, I did it on my ZRX 1100 in December when I had not used it for a month or so, after a few attmpts at starting the battery felt a little weak so I jumped it off the (wife's) car, turned it over a few times to clear the combustion chambers, it then started fine, you should not use the starter for more than a few seconds at a time though, it can damage the starter motor.

I have not used it now since Christmas so I expect I will jump it first time.

Re damp in the kill switch. side stand interlock, simply get a spare spark plug, attach it to one plug lead, lay it on the head or block and crank the engine, you will soon see if you are getting a spark or not.

FWIW that silkolene fuel addy is great for a 1st run through of the season.

On a modern bike with no off position on the fuel tap, to run it dry, just use it down to reserve, and use some of the reserve fuel. To empty the carbs, just switch back to normal position and it will run the carbs out.
