My Volvo 850 GLT is now approaching ten years of age this September. It has full Volvo service history, is very clean and has only covered 39000 miles.
How much is it worth on the private market. I have been offered £2600. Is this a fair price. Is replacing it with aNissan 1.5 Almera a good idea, or should I keep the volvo for another 2/3 years and then change.
Help please.

Chris,
Unless you have a serious change in circumstances why on earth change it, it should do as many years again and the mileage another four times over.
Having said that, even though the mileage is low, £2600 is a good offer for any large 1992 car.

Many thanks for your advise . Its just the petrol costs that I am trying to reduce, but its a lovely car.

Chris,
Have a sit down and a good look at the costs.
Your car is near the bottom of the depreciation curve. Buy newer and you will not only lay out savings/finance but the next couple of years depreciation will cost far more than the extra fuel costs. In particular if you maintain that low mileage.
You can work it out yourself but I guestimate you will save less than £200 a year on fuel going from the Volvo to a smaller car at 42mpg. The increase in depreciation will most likely be many times that.

David, you have made me see sense at last, many thanks. Are you in the motor trade.??
Chris.

He can't be in the trade otherwise he would have told you to buy a new one :)

Contrary to popular belief, petrol costs are vastly outweighed by the cost of depreciation, dealer profit etc. Keep the 850.

It's up to you but with that sort of mileage your Volvo is just about run in , although 10 years old is the golden age for things to wear ( electrical motors etc ) . Sounds about the right price for trade in , so add about another grand on top for private ( very low mileage!! ) . I 'd say stick with the Volvo for the time being ( you sound a bit unsure as to change or not ) and ask yourself why do you want to change , good luck ....

Chris - David W is far too modest to answer your question, so do a search under David W (then try a "space", otherwise you'll get David Withers, who is another good egg) and see for yourself! The words "Is His Holiness the Pope a Catholic?" will also give you a clue ....
Incidentally, I've recently made a similar decision on very similar grounds, thanks to all the astonishing range and depth of advice freely given by the many experts in this forum.

Dont understand what you are saying. Did you change to a smaller car.??

Chris - I've just changed to "Threaded View" and clicked that your post at 1500 is directed to me!
Since I understood you to say in response to David W (who, although in the trade, is *not* a dealer who would try to persuade you to buy a new car, but to buy or, in this case, to stick with the car that suits you best), "you have made me see sense at last", I came to the not unreasonable conclusion that you had, with a not dissimilar age and size of estate to mine, decided to stick with the devil know.
So, which part of "I've recently made a similar decision on very similar grounds" didn't you understand? Only joking, as you'll discover a great many of the regular contributors do in this forum - the tricky bit is knowing *when* they are joking!
Ronnie
PS Like your response on "degunking" for old and new cars respectively.

Hmmmm
"In the Motor Trade" is very defining. However I do maintain vehicles for a group of folks in exchange for money so.....

Like I said "far too modest ...." in my view but "nothing sinister" was intended. As with Lennox Lewis, I'll be happy to call you whatever you want to be called!

Hi Chris,
Whilst I largely agree with all thats been said - e.g. you should hang on to the 850, be warned that you might face big bills very soon replacing the airbags... I don't know how many are fitted to your GLT (if any!) but I know that my dads T5 will need its four replacing when its ten years old - theres a sticker where the front passengers (and drivers I think) door opens showing the airbags 'expiry' date...
Obviously they wont go off after this date, but its not guaranteed that they will go off at all if you have an accident.
Airbags are not cheap!
Consider...

I assume its a saloon, since the market has never liked them.
But what a bargain!
If I could manage with a saloon I'd be out there after one already. As it is ,the estate has one of the stupidest boots available.
Doesnt mean I would not be a bidder for a good T5 with aircon/leather.Have to gas it,but a rechip should sort that.
