Jetta 16v power-steering rack. - Ben Chapman
Does anyone know where i might be able to get hold of a new or reconditioned exchange steering rack for an '89 VW Jetta 16v with power steering in the North East, particularly in the Newcastle area? VAG want £577 inc VAT, i cant afford that!

Try and find a 1.8GL with PAS in a scrapyard and used the PAS from that if it hasn't been cannibalised already. That was the main 80's MK II that had standard PAS.

Unfortunately the 16v rack is different to a gl and 8v gti- its a quicker rack.

German & Swedish do them for £125 (reconditioned). Your nearest branch is Leeds (0113 2443637) but they do mail order.

Thanks for that. I gave them a call but they said they dont have any 16v racks in this country. They are awaiting an order from Germany but couldn't tell me when it was going to arrive! They want me to ring back next week, but i really need it before then. I will have to try Euro Car Parts.

In the febuary edition of Car Mechanics they have used a product called Forte power steering treatment tel No 02476 474069 to build re-energise the seals ,perhapsits worth a try before you start spending serious money

Everyone I know who has fitted PAS to a Mk II 16v just fitted whatever PAS rack they could get, usually from a 1.8GL.
