I wonder if the problem is related to the Distributor again. I had this replaced 3 yrs ago (covered 20K miles since). The problem is that the car turns over by the starter motor, and the RPM needle reads approx 300 - 500 rpm. But the eggine does not seems to fire up. I remember I had the same symptom 3 yrs ago and I called out the RAC to disgnose. The mechanic was spot on, he asked me to replace the distributor, which I did and fixed the problem.

I know it's not the battery, it's only replaced last few months (I also tried using a battery jump start to rule out that it'snot a battery problem).

I have alos serviced the car last month, with the spark plugs replaced. The car runs beautifully yesterday, but it failed to start this morning suddenly? Can this happen?

Can it be the distributor again? What can I check for? Or shall I just call the RAC again?

Thanks for any advice.

Called out the RAC, but not sure what the cause is. Managed to start the car once when WD40 was sprayed onto the HT leads (spark plugs and king leads). RAC mechanics says the spark is very weak, and hence have asked to replace all the HT leads. However, this doesn't fix the problem. Theyt have now asked to change the Coil Pack. I'm not sure to take their advice or not. I have spent £30 already on the leads and still no fix. The Coil Pack will cost about £70.

I'm not sure how the ignition system works on cars. I have a question on ignition system. I have the theory that the Hall Sensor may be faulty. If the Hall Sensor in the distributor is faulty will I still get sparks (or very small sparks) from the coil?

If the answer is yes, then I will change the distributor (i.e replace the Hall Sensor). I don't think it's the coil pack, becaue I think if the coild pack is faulty it will be hot/warm, when I tocuhed it it is cold as stone.

I think when I get the spark (intermitant) is because the ECU is providing the signal to the ignition unit/amplifier/coil??

See what you guys think before I go out and buy a Distributor.

It could well be the coil on its way out, the golfs of that era are known for this problem, which is why you won't find a s/hand coil. Take the coil off and look for cracks in the plastic, that's a good indication of its condition. Also check that the earth strap from the coil to the engine is in good condition.

The hall sender in the distributor usually fails with a no spark condition, not a weak spark, as you have.

Thanks for the advice. One of my mate have a similar problem and also recommend me to change the coil first.

I have taken on the advices given, and have bought the Coil Pack. I will try it out this weekend and will feedback.

The IGNITION COIL/AMPLIFIER MODULE (Coil Pack) was replaced, the car fired up first time with no problem. When I looked at the old coil pack closely, there was a small hair line crack probably allowing water/damp to get in.

Thanks and appreciated for the advice. I'm wondering what I should do with the new set of plug leads wheich I bought. I don't paricular like them comaparing to the original VW leads. They're slightly shorter and very tight fit. I wonder if I could return it to the shop where I bought it from?

Even without cracks the output voltage may be down compared with a new one.

You could try taking the leads back, but you have fitted them & most motor factors don't take back electrical components so you could be stuck with them.

I will try and take leads back to see what they say. After all the part was not fit for purpose, i.e shorter length and the original VW. If that fails then I will eBay it.
