so the wonderful J Walker is vacating radio 2's drive time slot, booo.
To replaced by Mr Chris Evans. Now I don't mind the ginger mop, in fact I think he can be excellent, but his style at drive time?? Guess we'll see.

You can have Sara Cox if you like. Anything to get her away from Radio 1 (and me)!

Just do like me... admit you're old and move to Radio 2.

assuming you live in London, no better place than BBC London 94.9
From 3pm you have Danny Baker and then the drive time show 5pm till 7pm is with Eddie Nestor, usually lively topics under discussion, no music though.
|
Johnny Walker's relaxed style and readily recognised voice will be sorely missed at tea times - plus his gentle bantering with Sally Traffic.....

Hmmm... I think she's got a great face for radio...
I'll miss JW but cannot stand CE, he's one of those people whose success I've never undertsood.

I can't stand hime either, but it's easy enough to see why he is successful: he is an enemy of reason and a friend of vulgarity and stupidity. Corporations love that, believe me. A role very similar to that of the utterly loathsome Jimmy Savile (when he was alive).

He'll be a bit surprised to read that...:-)

Not that I'm aware of, but he is still very much alive.

, but he is still very muchalive.
Yeah. Whaddever.

I just chill out with Smooth FM 102.2, anybody worked out their secret song yet?
Only one beat of the song as a clue and the prize is now well over £80,000.
Chris Evans at drive time - Oh dear, not for me.

I can only hope that they offered it to the splendid Stuart Maconie first and he turned it down for some reason.
Looks like it's PM for ever now, at least when Maconie was sitting in for Walker I had a music show worth listening to on the way home.

5 Live at drive time for me, Peter Allen and Jane Garvey, shame it is MW only, constant changing from 909 to 693 and back again coming up from Cornwall to Somerset. One advantage of a DAB radio in the car would be better reception on 5 Live.
|
Did JW jump, or was he pushed? I can't believe it, no more Cruising! Two hours with motormouth is going to take some getting used to.
|
Twist this discussion a bit.
I am a R5 live listener on AM. We all know that AM is a bit iffy at various times of the day/places in the UK.
Anyone listening to R5 on DAB in car? whats the reception / coverage like?

Whenever I've been perusing the FM stations at night I can usually pick up Radio 5 Live - seems to be broadcast by the local BBC radio stations.

Sounds to me like Radio London has the better deal. They should get rid of Steve "factoid" Wright from R2 (or all radio preferably), Danny Baker would be far better. Will be sad to see JW go, but I tend to listen more to Peter Allen & Jayne Garvey anyway. But then I miss Ed Stewart and the accumulator quiz...
Beginning to think that Chris Evans' moment may have passed. The Sunday night programme on ITV he had recently was dire.
Best thing on R2 is Mark Radcliffe; Just a Minute on Mondays is making me work a little later so I can listen to it on the way home - Brilliant.

no JW wants to pursue a slightly diff direction. Lot to do with his own issues & the 'spiritual' direction that he has been taking with some of his guests. I believe he's doing this via another show, but don't quote me. Can't see Ginger Nuts & the BareFoot Dr getting it on-which is a real shame. I am so going to miss him.
Just checked on the website-JW has a new Sunday show.
FYI R4 news quiz tonight is a special retro re the late & wonderful Linda Smith-whom I'm sure JW would have liked. 18:30

Steve Wright's pretty good as well in my view - always lively and entertaining three hours.
The Old Woman is wonderful...:-)

You'll be telling me next that you think that Elvis thing is funny(!)...I guess that in the twenty years since he did the same slot on R1, nothing has changed in what he does.
Fair enough though, I really can't abide Chris Moyles but a lot of people I know like him

This is madness! Stuart Maconie is the natural successor in this slot. In fact, I enjoyed Terry Wogan's holidays as it menat JW for the morning drive (motoring link)and Stuart for the return leg! Evans is over rated and over the hill, and I give him no more than 3 months in this slot.

What bad news.
It seems that R2 has fallen for the smug bore's self-publicity.
Another vote for Maconie!
... as if they listen.

A substantial part of my day is spent in the car, and it is surprising how the R2 presenters between 11 and 8 have become a sort of family. I do not want Carrot Top as a relative, Maconie would get my vote too.
|
Well if we have to lose JW then OK, I'd go with Maconie too. But if anyone dares to move Arise with Sir Terence then it will raise the waring hordes of TOGS & TYGS including me. He's the perfect way to start the day...and get well soon Dr Wally...
Yours

I've been listening to Wogan for more years than I care to remember, including during his first period as a breakfast time presenter.
Although it's decades ago, I still think the funniest remark made by one of his listeners was the one from the bloke who wrote that his wife was known as The Slough turnoff.
Any other town or city than Slough would have meant it wouldn't have had quite the same ring...

{laughing} exactly! He really makes the difference to the drive to work. Used to listen to Today but it was so stressful that finding Terry has done good things for my blood pressure.
My favourite one of late (DD - It's Friday, it's motoring radio!)
Man goes to a Chinese restaurant with his wife, looks at the menu and orders Chicken Surprise. The waiter returns with a pot and places it on the table. As the man reaches to life the lid, it rises by itself and two little eyes are seen, scanning about. The lid closes. The looks in amazement back at his wife, only to see the lid lift again and the same thing happens-two little eyes appear for a second then disappear. Man calls back the waiter and asks what's going on. Waiter says, what did you order? Man says Chicken Surprise and explains what's happening with the pot. 'Ah' says the waiter 'Sorry, but you must have the Peeking Duck'....
It was funnier when the Togmeister did it!!

The one from TW that had me rolling up was the email from the secretary of the MG owners club;
" I have been asked to point out that the website X-Rated Midgets contains no useful performance or tuning tips whatsoever".
