On a 'N'95 plate. Does not like cold days and will not start without alot of cranking. In warm weather, or when engine is hot it will start fine. Battery is good and new glow plugs made no difference whatsoever. Once it has started it runs well after a puff of smoke has cleared. Any ideas chaps?

A common problem on these Isuzu's. Check the valve clearances; cold. You'll likely find that there isn't any clearance at all and the valves are being kept fractionally open, leading to loss of compression.
I've done so many of these, that I even bought a special tool to change the shims.

As screwloose says, it's quite a common problem.
Here's a couple of past posts I've dug up with a forum search that may help as well.

Thanks for advice and I'll check them out. It is not my car and the clearences have probably not been set since it rolled off the production line 11 years ago!

one other question...anyone know the correct valve clearences for Isuzu engines? The Haynes manual for the diesel engine only appears to mention Vauxhall engines.

Inlets 6 thou
Exhausts 10 thou
I suspect you will find most or all of the inlets fully closed up.
