I've just bought a Y reg 318se with 88,000 miles on the clock.
It has got full service history but is due a service now and I'm going to use a local garage.
What needs to be done and what should I get him to change just to be on the safe side eg cambelt, brake discs etc.
Any advise is most appreciated as I've booked it in for tomorrow.
Thanks

Any garage should service it as required ie mileage/age,they should not need telling what to do, but should inspect and report any problems.any found they should ask you if you want the repairs done,As the MD would but cheaper

The service indicator on the instrument display (comes on for a few seconds when you initially turn on the key) should tell you a) how many miles to next service, and b) what the service should be (ie) oil service or inspection
the normal BMW sevice routine is for
oil service
Inspection 1
oil service
inspection 2
oil service etc and repeat
normally every 15000 miles but the computerr adjusts this figure depending on how the car has been driven.
In order to last 15K miles the car must have the recommended Castrol Formula SLX longlife oil (not cheap at about £12/litre)
if semi synth is used change the oil more frequently (probably not a bad idea anyway whatever oil is used as 15K is a long stretch between changes))
oil service = change oil and filter, check pads, and qiuck safety check - expect about £110
Insp 1 = as above plus more detailed checks on suspension, remove wheels etc - expect about £160
Insp 2 = as above 2 plus change plugs and air filter - expect about £200
also pollution filter every couple of years (£20 approx)
additionally every 2 years change brake fluid (£40 approx)
every 4 years change coolant using BMW approved coolant (£50 approx)
Any questions pse ask - there is a forum recommending good independent BMW garages

Hi Jacks(!)
Where?
Tried the good garage guide on HJ's site but nothing local to south Hertfordshire. Any suggestions most welcome as my 1994 320 coupe is due for a service soon.

I can recommend an excellent mobile mechanic whose patch is Herts. He's a specialist in BMW, VAG and MB. I've used him for several years now and could not be happier with his competent service on my cars.
If of interest, e-mail me via the Mods (who have always been willing to act as forwarding agents on an occasional basis).

Recommended site by area for good/bad BMW service.
I know it's generalising but... Independents seem to score highly - they know what they are doing & don't rip off (but 1 or 2 incompetants on the list so take care) ...main dealers , general feedback is overpriced, indifferent service and the main complaint is saying that work is required when it isn't (somebody has to pay for all the suits, chrome, danish pastries, reception babes, and " computer work stations" ) - give me a grease stained mechanic with a fag behind his ear any day !!!
But - hey - if you are driving a company car then the dealers are probably the best, if you pay your own bills - independents every time.

your car doesnt have a cambelt, if ive got my engines rite... an oil is oil, oil filter, microfilter, and brake pad check...
if its an early E46 they wont remove ur wheels for an ins1...
ins 2 is the works bascially the lot...id say 90k miles is an ins 1 that is if all the previous services have been done correctly. if theres a little symbol on ur dash that looks like a clock.. suspect a bf change:
BF every 2 years.
coolant every 4 years
