What exactly, if anything, do the Mercedes letters actully mean?
Was bored in a traffic jam and was wondering what CLK actully meant. C for the class and L for coupe, but why K? And why L for coupe?
And if the cars start with the A class, and soon a B class, and C and E, why is the big one S?
And why is the soft roader M?
TIA
PS, if they did a coupe based on the E class, would that be an ELK :)?

K is Kompressor = German spelling
|
K=Kurz (German for 'short'). C is for coupe, L for 'Leicht' (light).
The 'C' in C-class used to stand for 'Compact' and the S for 'Super'. I think that they've all lost their meaning now though and A, B, M etc just made up by the marketing people.

And didn't E (as in SE and SEL) stand for "einspritz" = injection?

Come to think of it, does 'Actros' mean anything?

No. The E for Einspritz followed the number as in 190E (there was a plain 190 with a carb), 230E, 300E etc. In fact it probably had some logic up to the mid 1980's then got a bit mixed up.

"got a bit mixed up"
Bit like me then!

Aprilia, is he a moderator??
Very good knowledge!
The swear filter is there for a reason, zon. Please do not try to bypass it.
And having good knowledge isn't a necessity for a moderator, trust me. :-) smokie, BR Moderator

IIRC the E in SE, SEL etc was for injection, there was a 280S that was a carb version of the 280SE. The E was then dropped when the model designation became a prefix (and all models were injection anyway), i.e. S280, S600L etc.

Yes, that's correct. But it gets confusing because a 3-litre W124 E-class would be badged as a '300E' - the E being for Einspritz. A bit later on, when all the cars had injection, they put the E in front of the number to designate the class (e.g. a 2.2 litre W124 becomes E220). Gets even worse when the numbers don't match the capacity (like on a BMW 318i). Best not to think about it too hard otherwise you'll go mad.....

Aprilia is right, as always! K is the first letter of Kompressor but, as used on a Merc it stands for K for Kurz. I am now much better informed but not any wiser!
|
SLK...Super Leicht Kurz
CLK...Coupe Leicht Kurz
K...Kompressor
SE...Super Einspritz
SEL...Super Einspritz Lang
SL...Super Leicht
etc...

On the capacity issue, I thought there was (or is) a loophole in German company tax rules. They are based on the model name not the actual engine fitted to the car. For example a BMW 318i would be taxed as if having a 1800cc motor but in reality be fitted with a 2000cc+. Someone out there far more knowledgeable than me would be able to confirm or crush this reasoning!

IIRC it is based on BHP not capacity, also cars such as the 535d have an apparent cc (3500) that is higher than it's actual (3000).

We're onto a different subject now.
In the mists of time (1980's), the tax and insurance bandings of the cars for Germany, Switzerland, Austria and a few others went according to horsepower. Typically 75, 90, 110, and 150+ which is why, for example a 2.8i Granada had 'only' 150 bhp as it kept it below the 150 threshold. Over this threshold you had Porsche and the like.

That sounds similar to the UK's old company car tax scheme based on engine size. A 2 litre car actually had a 1994 engine etc to keep it under the 2 litre threshold.

K= Karrossie meaning body

SLK...Super Leicht Kurz CLK...Coupe Leicht Kurz K...Kompressor SE...Super Einspritz SEL...Super Einspritz Lang SL...Super Leicht etc...
Great, Thanks
What did TE and SEC mean then?
