Dear John,
In todays Telegraph you mentioned poor quality petrol could have worn the bores of a BMW.Please recommend the best petrol for my ailing Ford Escort 1.6 Zetec or any other.Who supplies Tesco garages?
Best wishes Mick.

i never buy supermarket petrol, because they dont put in the right amount of detergents, i always buy shell petrol (i think its called optima, but i might be wrong)
I remember reading a while ago that supermarkets had cleaned up their act, so to speak, by matching the detergent content of their petrol to match the likes of BP, Shell, etc. Given that all petrol comes from a small number of depots (you'll remember the national repercussions of a handful of pickets last year), there really can't be much difference.

Its called OPTIMAX and really does what it claims in my experience.
I have to disagree with the previous views on supermarket petrol, not from any technical knowledge but from the experiences I have had. Around 75% of my fuel comes from either Tesco or Safeway and has done for well over 15 years, between SWMBO and myself we have regularily clocked up 35 - 40K annually and have never suffered any poor quality fuel problems. My doggy old SRi Cavalier has done over 310K and the only fuel problems have been a couple of leaky pipes and a recently replaced fuel tank. My only concession to fuel quality has been the use of Millers diesel additive in our Sharan having read the potential problems with lack of pump lubrication.
I'm more concerned that I'm reading this page at this time on a Saturday night.....

Optimax=optimum profit, as it costs more than your standard juice for negligeable return.
Re. fuel consumption threads passim, who on earth manages to achieve the consistent driving behaviour/conditions required to make the difference? Every journey for most drivers varies in terms of traffic conditions/route taken to the point where the upgrade on fuel simply cannot be worth it.

i used to drive with normal unleaded, but when i changed to optimax the difference was very noticeable. the cars that have changed (for the good) are a 1994 hyundai sonata, a 1991 lada riva, and a 1987 citroen bx, all these cars are now running on optimax, and we now dont have starting problems with the citroen, the lada runs better (it couldnt have run much worse), and the hyundai seems to be faster.
We don't seem to get this Optimax yet, or are some people slow at changing their signs?
What I want for Toad is 50/50 petrol/benzole.

Never had any problem with petrol, but I can tell you that my Diesels go further, faster, and cleaner on so called dirty French diesel at just about 30& less money!

It was mentioned on another thread recently that the "dirty" French diesel is actually a much higher specification the the UK product.
And the 30% difference in price is all down to higher UK fuel duty.
Aye - French diesel has more energy per litre - thus better economy is possible.
I can't get French diesel. Is all UK brands the exact same ?
If not which is better?
I tried Optimax in my astra - made no difference at all.
