Hi all,

Got a message on our answerphone from a chap who has apparently bought our old MINI. Seems genuine enough, but I was wondering if by calling him back to have a chat about it I was heading into unforseen peril.

The only thing I can think of to try and route out rouge-dom is to call him (withholding our number) and saying I'd called about the car.

If the car has gone to a good home it would be interesting to have a chat with this chap but am I heading into some kinda scam?!

Any comments, as ever, much appreicated.

I doubt you are heading into a scam, chances are he just wants to ask what mileage it had on when it left your care etc.

I rang the last owner of my Focus to ask what he used to clean the inside with so that I could do the same! It was so immaculate that I wanted to keep it that way...

He already has your phone number, and knows what car you used to own, so I doubt very much if it could be a scam, unless you give him some sensitive information when you ring him, but you would know not to do that.

Let us know what he says!

Just got back and was about to point out that if he was able to ring then he already knew your number when I spotted that Citroënian {P} had already mentioned it...:-)

Probably got it through the previous owner if you had sold it to someone before him.

PS

I've always contacted the previous owner of a used vehicle I've been contemplating buying (any genuine retail outlet will immediately provide the details on request) and asked discreet, but general questions about the vehicle involved.

The vast majority are always happy to provide any information that may be required.

You must have been available through directory enquiries, so he knows your address already.

I'd agree that he's just doing his homework! I did the same when I used to buy expensive cars! Now I buy bangers it's not so important...

I knew I was taking it too far when I published your number, car registration details and full address on the Internet Lee.

If it's any consolation, I completely regret it now...well almost.

Follow up:

I called the chap and it turns out he was quite genuine - it's nice to know that our car has ended up with someone who's looking after it, but we were a bit sad that it'd gone.

He said it'd been unsold for a year as it had no aircon - That wasn't really a problem for us, or when we sold it but interesting to know!

If anyone sees a pure silver/black MINI Cooper around Grantham with the reg YE52 then give him a flash, it's our old car!

The poor chap will wonder what's wrong with all these strangers flashing him!
