has anyone not bought a car after a test-drive?

Being a firm VW/Audi fan, I must say that the new Golf GTI looks great.
However I haven't driven one but colleagues of mine say that it is rather 'hard core' compared to previous Golfs, which is good if you like track days, but not so good if you do 20,000+ business miles a year and aren't as young as you used to be !

Yes many times. The most extreme was an Alfa 155 where I knew within 200 yds of the dealers that it was not for me! Probably the shortest test drive in history - about 2 minutes.
I read an opinion in the DT motoring section that the new GTi is a good car but about £5k overpriced.
The new Octavia vRS is available soon. It's the same platform but about £3k cheaper.

I'd like to wait and see how the new SEAT Leon Cupra shoulder's itself up to it's brethren. As the sporting arm of VAG, I'd expect it to be the better Hot Hatch.
But by all accounts, for now, at least, the Golf is leading the pack...unless you enjoy torque-steer fun, in which case the VXR is up top.

Which GTI 2.0 are we talking about?
The new one or the non-turbo Mk4 version?

Depends how many cars you test drive, as part of choosing a new company car I will be testing 6 cars for a weekend each in the next 2 months. I don't know which one I will get but it wil be one of the six.
I wouldn't have a car without testing one and I couldn't be certain it was the best unless I'd tested the close competition.

I was all set to buy a Lexus IS200 until I sat in it. With the sunroof as standard, my head was tight against the roof line and I am not that tall.
Went with the Alfa 156 instead and have no regrets.

If this is the new one, go for it.
If this is the old one, don't even bother test driving this horrible car. Whoever decided a car in this day and age should have a 2 litre engine developing just 114bhp needs shooting. Then they need shooting again for being utterly stupid enough to badge it as a GTI.
It's not a GTI - its a mid spec, gutless Golf with a horrible engine, some posh seats and some alloys.
For the same money you could get a Seat Leon Cupra or a newer Seat Toledo 20VT.

"how do i retrieve this thread if its gone"
They don't disappear unless the Mods hide them for various reasons. Threads just get shunted down the list and you can easily find it again by doing a 'Forum Search'
