I'm thinking of buying a late pre-owned Volvo V70 2.4 T SE and saw one advertised at a good price by a Volvo dealership. When I went to see it I found out it had been imported by a member of the armed services under the TDS (Tourist and Diplomatic Scheme). The registration document stated 'Imported Vehicle'
Apparently, this TDS scheme is suported by Volvo, but I'm concerned about the re-sale value of the car when I come to sell it which I expect to do in about 3 years time.
Does anyone have any experience of buying / selling Volovos that have been imported in this way, especially with regard to the re-sale value?

Don't know if it's of any connection or relevance, but someone told me recently that there is a showroom attached to the factory which is quite happy to supply UK spec vehicles for personal export. Is this where it originated from?
He also reckoned that the cars, though still worth importing, seemed overpriced, and settled for a Saab as they seemed to be much better value in comparison to UK prices, and so likely to make more on resale.

Your Volvo's value will not be any different to any other similar Volvo just because of what you mention. The factors that go towards determining the value of any car, including your Volvo at that age will be,1,condition,2,mileage,and 3,where you sell it.Just because it did not come through a UK main dealers has **** all to do with the value.

What usually happens is the Volvo dealer is involved in the TDS scheme. It contracts with a serviceman to supply him with a car for 6 months which he must use to a certain mileage, then return or allow to be returned to the UK Volvo dealer. This legally avoids VAT being paid and creates a high quality nearly new Volvo with a lot of profit in it.

I'm looking for a Volvo V70 - where can I find Volvo dealers selling TDS imports. I plan on keeping the car for several years so resale value probably won't be a problem. At the moment I have only been offered 5% discount on a new one - nowhere near good enough!

I found a good selection of Volvo Dealers in the Motoring Section of the Saturday Telegraph, many of who had late V70s. The dealer I visited was Hapsteads who are in Horsham Sussex. The Volvo website is also a good source of information, it gives you the oportunity to call up individual dealers and search for a late model car of your choice on-line with a description and photo of each car.
Good Luck
Brian.
