Buying from a Dealer - Anthony Farrar
I am thinking of buying a new car, although I always tell other people not to, because of the immediate loss of value, but prices are quite keen at the moment and if I take care of it for a number of years the devaluation will be diluted considerably. I will also know, 'where it has been and how it has been used'.

Does anyone, other than HJ, know what the dealer profit margins are? Are they all different? I want to know what sort of pressure I can sensibly use to reduce prices still further.

I'm not a tight-fisted git but I hate wasting hard-earned money

I like the 'know where its been' idea, you should see the Docks Grand Prix in Southampton lovely brand new cars thrashed and bashed on and off the ships b4 delivery to the dealer network.Frightning.
Re: Buying from a Dealer - richard price
have a look in the FAQ para 2 - you will then locate a UK supplied car with the % discount listed - that will give you some idea.
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Keith
I tried upgradeyourcar.com and they were offering 11% discount on the BMW 320 Coupe.

I am fairly sure that this was for a UK car with full warranty etc. They have a comprehensive site where you can even select the options.

Now I just need to win the £20,000 or so to buy one!
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Moosh
What make model are you after, as a lot depends on this fact.

Some models are hard to shift or with strong competetion from imports hence a larger discount.
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Miller
Why not just buy at a year old, when most cars will still have two years warranty left to run and save yourself the painfull first year of depreciation?
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Steve G
Try www.trade-sales.co.uk huge amount of new unregistered cars just about all makes covered . You wont find cheaper unless you import yourself.
Re: Buying from a Dealer - crazed idiot
poor service

poor car presentation

ring up slough trading standards and ask how many complaints they have had about trade sales!

like to hear more "facts" on this retailer - a reminder that everyone posting needs to be careful (legally) on wide-sweeping allegations ...
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Steven Jones
...the trade-sales cars are pre-registered I believe so technically you are the second owner - this might not make much of a difference except that some motor insurance policies offer new for old replacements for cars stolen/written off within the first year BUT only for the first owner!

Why not try a car broker?
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Andrew Barnes

Untrue, you have to pay 25 quid for the first registration fee on most of the cars.

Re: Buying from a Dealer - Steve G
What exactly do you mean by complaints ?
Hard to see how selling new cars with manufacturers warranties for thousands less than main dealers can cause problems.
Poor service , just like main dealers then
Poor presentation , so a few cars are dirty must be difficult to keep hundreds of cars clean.
Re: Buying from a Dealer - Neil
When you factor in the VED a full three year warranty and then any other discounts/incentives available through a main dealer you can match or beat the prices offered by Trade Sales or Motorpoint.

The most convenient and cost effective solutions for my wife and I last year, buying a Golf GT TDI and a Ka Collection, were through a main dealer. We tried both Trade Sales and Motorpoint, and we tried carpricecheck.com (who have very good prices) and instead we bought the cars for less than their 12-month old equivalents through main dealers.

Know the available prices and stick to them.
