HPi checking a car - Blue {P}
I'm going to need to do an HPi check on a car tonight, I'd like to check the mileage as best as possible, previous insurance write-offs, finance etc. but I'm also very tight and don't want to pay HPi £38 for the privelege and I'm sure I've heard of them even cheaper thab the £20 jobbie from Car Watch UK.

Anyone got any recommendations? Also, does anyone know if the Car Watch UK one is as good as the HPi check for £38? I know the old "get what you pay for" probably applies but I don't see how checking a database can be done better by one firm than another.

I used HPI check for a motor cycle recently, logged on via Motorcycle News, MCN, got a small discount, £34-95 IIRC. Very good service, only problem was that, as required I got in advance of the purchase details from the V5 however I got the serial number rather than the doc number (or perhaps the other way around) which in theory invalidated the HPI warranty. Nevertheless the comprehensive info provided validated the recorded mileage, MOT, no accident/write off, reg no etc etc, worth the money for the reassurance.

Thats a bit harsh. I think the poster was after info on the differnces (if any) between them. If you can get the same for £18 less, then why not?

Well seeing as HJ recommends them I'm going to give it a quick once over with Car Watch UK and see what happens.

Fingers crossed, although I'm sure it'll be clear.

OK, you do get what you pay for, Car Watch didn't have any record of the car, The AA do so I bought a check off them.

However, I think I entered the VIN incorrectly, as it came up as not matched with what The AA hold.

Can anyone remember the format of a Ford VIN? I thought it was WFOBXX and that's what I entered, but the guy who's selling says it may be WF0BXX...

He's e-mailing me with a copy of the logbook now.

Having seen the logbook I think I must have entered it incorrectly on their website, I'm sure it's WF0 not WFO.
