Twice after long journeys in hot weather the car has failed to start (electrics working but no turn over),last time I left it and the next day it started no problem. Is it something to do with the heat or is this coincidental?

Are you sure it's the immobiliser? Is the clock light flashing rapidly?

Happy happy joy joy! went out to check what the light was doing (it was flashing normally every 2 seconds) and the car started! But I'd be interested to know if anyone has had experience of this, especially relating to overheating.

Not with overheating. Next time it won't start, look at the light. If it flashes quickly (more than every 2 seconds) If it is, you have an immobiliser problem (which I doubt if it's a temperature problem). If it doesn't you need to look elsewhere.
Don't worry though - someone will be along soon to help.
