Me and Adski have been suffering withdrawal symptoms. We were wondering if one of the mods had hit the 'delete all' button ?
I even had to by a S***** T**** to read the driving supplement
|
Oh good. I don't have to resort to going outdoors now. It was a close shave - I almost decided to get up out of my chair!

Was wondering what to do on the Internet without the backroom...

not quite like losing a leg (I would imagine), but horribly uncomfortable not having HJ & Co on tap for what seemed ages.
Normality's wonderful!
|
Funny that Adski should be one of the first to post. I had a look at the wreckage of the site and it was strangely beige (metallic) and seemed to have a boot?
;o)

Nice to see you back.
Having just come back from holiday (Slovenia, since you ask - recommended) I have no posts between 11th July and 24th, is thereany way I can get them?
|
That's the problem. All posts since then have been lost.
And Al, my Saturday was nothing without your wit ;-)

Let's just say there was an unfortunate and highly unusual combination of events and not discuss or speculate on it. This is HJ's business, his livlihood, so we'll leave it there.

Sorry for cluttering up the site with rubbish but I've tried emailing the mods and it gets bounced back.
BobbyG still can't get on. Obviously others may be having this problem.
Any ideas?

Started to panic. Came into work this morning and thought I may have to do some work.
|
I can think of some forums where losing a few weeks posts would be a bonus, but this isn't one of them.
Welcome back...
|
I am finding it dreadfully slow to load some pages from the Backroom - it even 'times out' on occasion - mind you I was having similar trouble before the 'crash of 24/7'
Anyone else having this trouble?
|
Yep - quite variable though.
|
Also the roadtest of the Peugeot 1007 has gone AWOL.

Thank heaven for small mercies!

I am getting this error message...
Database error: Invalid SQL: SELECT ip FROM ip_log WHERE ip = 'nnn.nnn.nn.nnn'
MySQL Error: 1016 (Can't open file: 'ip_log.MYI' (errno: 145))
Session halted.
1) The website seems to be running an awful lot faster - presumably because the above process isn't running.
2) IP Log ? Why are you logging my ip address (nb: the "n"s are mine) ?
|
I was just about to post the exact same thing.

I guess the IP log is part of how the server recognises the users prior to log on, there are various ways of doing this generally involving cookies though sometimes IP logs.
The error could be a discrepancy between what the newly configured server expects to see by way of info from cookies on users computers and what it is actually seeing.
|
I would say that we are missing part of the database. The error implies to me that the file which contains the table is missing. Strange query though - select ip where ip = xxx ; will just verify if the ip is in the table.
|
That's what I thought - the code should really be modified so that a database error isn't made public like that, as it can in some cases be a security risk.
|

I think it's more sinister than that. Our user information stuff is in cookies. The IP address database logs where everyone is, in order for them to be traced in case of legal procedings being brought against the site because of what someone has said in The Back Room.
Remember, we now have personal liability: www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=23...4

Yes, and the aliens broke into your house last night and stole your sandwiches.
Many people are switching off cookies or running software that limits or restricts cookie transmission. IP logging is a more reliable and easier method of gathering user stats.
The ip is logged solely for usage stats, no more , no less.

if you as a moderator knows the answer, why was the ex-moderator (a professional cio ) asking:
"2) IP Log ? Why are you logging my ip address (nb: the "n"s are mine) ?"
|
Tempted as I am to reply "none of your business", I fear that would only fuel the conspiracies that tend to dominate any discussion on the collection of usage stats.
Because the specific question has been asked and answered recently in the moderator's forum. Mark no longer has access to that and so wouldn't have known when he posted his question.
|

thank you for your civil answer and for not having given into the temptation. i do appreciate your honesty in the reply. it clears up the impression, that mat have been germinated in some minds by the "ex-moderator"'s asking the question, that there indeed was some conspiracy of which he was not aware.
sincerely, thank you again.

Sorry Alan, I didn't realise.
I realise now (correctly I hope!) that the disclaimer is there purely to protect the site and HJ from being sued. Whether a claimant then wants to persue a BR member is up to him, but he'd have to do so using his own devices.

Hi HJ, Sorry about the flipant remark regarding the road test, it was in jest and was aimed at the 1007, not the test, or - should I say - the tester!
|
|
Yes, Welcome Back indeed!
I'm sure many would agree with the sadly missed Sean:
"I just find this site strangely addictive."
(Thanks HJ & BR's for the '3 rear seat convertible' replies in one of the missing threads - this means plan B for my colleague...!)

I'd been away for 3 days and whilst driving up the A14 i was thinking that i'd have loads to catch up on when i got back - got back and there was about 4 posts :-(
|
Not having this site to go to just makes you realise that 90% of the internet is really just rubbish.
|
|
|
The sad thing is, at my age (56) I can't remember what I or anyone else posted between 11 and 24 July. We are all ephemeral....
Still, better than September 1752 when Britain first 'went into Europe' and adopted the Gregorian rather than the Julian calendar. We were 11 days behind, for reasons I won't bore you with, and many people thought that by moving from 1 Sept straight to 13 Sept they'd actually lost 11 days of their lives.
|
It might seem funny to some that a fortnight's threads and posts have gone missing, but it must be very frustrating, aggravating and downright annoying to those responsible for the website.
A lot of work in the case of all parties (including forum members) has literally disappeared into thin air.
