At what thickness should 2002 Toyota Corolla brake discs be replaced?
One dealer says 23mm another says 20mm hence confusion!
thanks Andy

if its less than 3 years old they have been known to do it under warranty
has it a full toyota service history?
|
Full Toyota SH.
The dealer pronounced it on last service done few weeks ago before warranty ran out....and wanted £400+ to change. I checked with another dealer (long history) and tho' price similar I got a different answer as to how thin they can be before replacement needed.

The minimum thickness is often "cast-in" to the disk.
Pull a wheel off and see.

To confirm rtaylor statement, I had two discs replaced and two skimmed under warranty after 40,000 miles! I have just been back for 50,000 mile service and I am getting the skimmed discs replaced under warranty along with a new steering rack (another common problem for some Toyotas).
www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/ should be able to give you lots of info regarding the well known Toyota disc problem. I am sure HJ won't mind this link as he reccomends this forum himself in his accurate car by car breakdown.

i would ring toyota customer services up and point out that you know several similar owners have had new disks or disk skims in similar situations, and ask why you were asked to pay
let us know what they say

Not sure about Toyota, but with Vauxhall they used to recommend:-
* non ventilated discs, when they were worn down by 2mm from their new size - one more pad change, then replace.
* vented discs, when they were worn down by 4mm from their new size - one more pad change, then replace.

just been on there for a couple of hours - lots of stuff but can;t seem to find anything directly relating to dud discs and premature wear? can anyone point me to a link there please?
(nb discs aren;t warped, one Toyota dealer says they need replacing (35months & 25000 miles) cos they're 23mm, another Toyota dealer says they're OK til 20mm?
Anyone know how thick they are new?
|
Mosts discs have the minimum thickness stamped on the outer edge, unfortunately after a few years the outer edge rusts and it is no longer legible. If you can view a new replacement disc the min thickness should be claraly visible

23mm sounds the more likely for a Toyota. The handbook, or a Haynes manual should say though.
