Advice from fellow readers requested ... My Nissan Primera is getting old and needs to be replaced. I can set the heater to warm the cabin and cool my face at the same time. Great for keeping alert on long winter motorway journeys. Most new cars these days have sophisticated systems that cannot achieve this simple setting. Does anyone know of a current car (other than Rover) where the heating/ventialtion setting can work like this?
Thanks for your help.

Most BMWs I think. Certainly my E46 (just-deleted 3 series) has this feature.
|
Yep, AFAIK all BMWs have this feature - certainly all the ones that I have experienced at least.
|
our v70 has this. the centre vents will either put out air from the heater/aircon or outside.
|
|
|
Yes the BMW is an option, if you can spend 20k+ that is. Surely there must be others?
|
Indeed my BMW 3-series (E46) let me choose between cold air to my face (used in summer) and hot air (used in winter). An excellent idea!

What a gloriously arcane sentence. That's some mighty special air coming through the vents of your 318......

Simple. Turn the heating on, then open the window. This works in any car.
|
Not so helpful on the motorway.
Changes occured in ventilation of cars when all the air went via the pollen filter. Hence many cars do not give cold (i.e. fresh) air via central vents and hot air via side vents and to feet.
Just keep looking!
Many cars with climate control will do this automatically though.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Warm feet, cold heart is a more usual expression, isn't it?
|
I think this is a facility on most Nissans, also on some Mazda's I've driven.

Cold hands, warm heart and vice versa round my way.
Getting cool air to the face and warm to the feet seems to be more difficult in modern cars - used to be easy in the old days.

"Many cars with climate control will do this automatically though."
I think so - Audi appear to as mine is very comfortable in winter, when you don't want stone cold air on your face, just colder than your feet.
There was certainly a bad phase before air-con became common, and everyone except Austin/Rover linked the centre vents to the heating system.

I remember Mazda in the mid-1970's had a system whereby you pulled the distribution slide control and it would switch cool air to the face and screen vents. Worked very well.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but i discovered the other night that our Citroen C3 with climate control will give you toasty toes and fresh air in your face. Wouldn't have a clue how to make the car do this, it just did.
Outside temp between -1 and 1oC, climate set to 21oC and on Automatic, and this effect came once the cabin had warmed up and presumably got to temperature.
|
Most Fords (AFAIK) have a setting on the heater controls to put all the heat to you feet, leaving only fresh air to your face.
|
Isn't it the standard setting on most medium size cars upwards, where you select the button where it shows two arrows? One towards the feet, and one towards the face. That will set it up so that you get cooler air to the face, and slightly warmer to the feet. Has always worked for me in many different cars (not always expensive brands!).
|
That's what I thought. My Fiat Coupe has this setting.
|
I've also never had an issue with the modern cars that have digital climate control, and I find the settings are pretty spot on. You just set the desired temp and let the car take care of things.
|
|
So the answer is most cars ?
|
With climate control yes - well probably....

My 03 Mondeo (air con , not climate) cannot achieve this.
Used to have a 1986 Polo where this was a brilliant feature and the hot air to the feet was a real hurricane.
Cars these days only seem to be able to achieve a gentle waft to the feet!
|
How bizarre. 55 reg Mondeo I'm hiring doesn't have that button on it with air to face and feet. Has one button for air to feet, one for air to face and one for air to windscreen!
|
Do not think current VWs have that facility.Passat with climate control- no way.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

You can select two of them - so achieving the result you want.

My 1989 Escort doesn't have this as a 'feature', but I found last night that if I set the temperature to just above the middle of the dial, it will blow hot/warm air to feet and everywhere else, and cold air to the centre two face vents.
It might be worth twiddling to see if this is the case on current cars, or if it was just by accident!

Tried this in 1995 Fiesta but no joy. Car gets lovely and warm, but no cold air to centre vents unless dial is down low and cold air everywhere then.

Fords used to supply hot air on the centre vents until the heat was turned below the mid-point;then they supplied cold. This facility went out with the Escort.
