I've just bought (2 months ago) a 53 plate Audi A3 2.0 FSI. It's been back to the dealer three times now under warranty to investigate a steering clunk. It happens at low speeds on full left lock - typically during parking. It's quite loud and I can feel it in the steering. The dealer - wait for it - replaced the REAR shockers as a fix. Needless to say this didn't work. Neither did a strip, lube and re-torque of the front end. I don't want to keep going back and forwards - any clues?
A second point on this - any other A3 owners feel their brake discs are scored? Mine feel ribbed, and they grind under braking as if they have surface rust (they don't). I've looked at other used A3s on the forecourt - all the same. Anyone any experience? How's the life of your pads and discs?
Thanks in advance for any answers!

this happened with me
there is a location/tightening/clamping strap on the steering column,,,so they told me
this was retightened and a "bush" was replaced in the steering column,,this cured the fault
the fault was a clunk around a certain type of corner,,,ie one i remembered was turning into my drive,,,,but not when i turned in from the other direction :)
hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips storme.
Another episode in the saga of this lemon - got to my car this morning to find a large U-shaped crack in the screen, just above the demist vents. Pity about the swearing ban......

Pity about the swearing ban......
Not wishing to start a discussion about this, but the ban is there for a reason. That being to stop this site degenerating into the way some other forums tend to go when there is no or little enforcement.

Only way to cure the brake problem is new discs/pads.
Don't know about the clunk - could be many things. I am surprised the dealer couldn't fix it (unless it is very minor, or intermittent).

still should be about £40 thru your insurance company with NO come back on your excess :)

Clunk on full lock that you can feel through the steering sounds like a worn out CV joint (one of the drive couplings between the gearbox/diff and the wheels, usually but not exclusively the outer ones).
Let's hear it for the pink fluffy dice!
