Listening to the J Vine Show yesterday on Radio 2, there was an item about a Passenger Waiting Environment (or a Bus Shelter, if you are not one of the enlightened) that had been built by Manchester counlcil at a cost of £250,000. A council worthy was on the show explaining that the reason those waiting in the Passenger Waiting Environment had to walk 50 metres to the bus stop when the bus arrived was because they might get confused if they saw buses with the same number waiting at the stop on the other side of the road.
A resident of Manchester was on a mobile at the said Passenger Waiting Environment, and when asked what the two day old structure was like, he said it had already developed a smell of urine and tobacco.
The residents of Manchester must be grateful that they have such public spirited politicians running their city. I can think of many authorities who would have thrown 250 grand away on providing health care for the elderly or improving education for those too young or infirm to even vote. Good heavens, some might even fritter it away on improving the roads.
Wish now I'd moved to manchester.

"it had already developed a smell of urine and tobacco."
Must have been too dark to see the graffiti then.

For £250,000 they could have bought at least 2 buses, depending on size.
Cheers, SS

A brand new single-deck low floor bus is about £80k depending on make & spec, a double-deck will be something like over 100k a time! But you can get a 20 year-old bus for around £1500 with full tax & ticket!

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Our lot invested 650 grand in one of those big TV things in the city center. Crowds watching it? I don't think so.
Back to car topics. I suppose you could watch a complete episode of a soap on it whilst stuck in a jam caused by the 9 month bridge closure.

I don't normally admit this, but I once went on a bus.
I found it a mostly over-rated experience, and frankly I dont think it will ever catch on. 8-)

The public transport in my area - which is generally of a high standard - is very affordable for me.
That's because I've got a free pass for buses, trains and ferries...:-)

Come again? Do I detect a note of cynicism or merely pure envy?
I've paid my dues in full over close to 50 years (almost certainly a great deal more than you) and, in the Metropolitan Council where I live, free public transport for those of 60 and over (used to be 65 for men up to nearly three years ago until a public outcry about equality) has been provided for many years.
I still use my car regularly but for short journeys or nipping for a pint or two I catch the bus.
My town also operates a very efficient park and ride scheme from various outlying car parks using LPG powered single-decker buses - in fact the Park and Ride idea almost certainly originated here many moons ago.

So would you prefer that old folks, with slow reactions and declining vision, drive more cars? Or should they just stay at home at never go out to buy food, visit friends etc?
|
>>So would you prefer that old folks, with slow reactions and declining vision, drive more cars?>>
Appreciate the support but, in my case, I also do about 12 to 15 miles a week with the dog. So my reactions are pretty good...:-)
Incidentally the father of one of my wife's best friends, who lives about 200 yards from us, goes for a brisk hour or more's walk every day.
Might not sound much but, even though he only looks about 65, next November he'll be receiving a telegram from the Queen.....:-)

Package deals to Euthanasia?

Yes - and no free pass either!

My dog sighed and said it's probably just that your dog has good reactions. He says that no matter how many walks to takes me on, I remain as slow-brained as ever.
Seriously, tho, didn't mean to suggest that you were past it -- just that most of us do eventually reach an age where driving is unwise, and the small cost to the rest of us of tempting old folk away from their cars seems to me like a good deal, even apart from the merits of keeping impoverished older people mobile.

Me too. Have you got your name down on the waiting list? I haven't!!!

Just for the record he's a Sheltie who hits the age of 15 in September...:-)
But he loves romping over the local golf courses - that's why I know just how far we walk in yards most weeks.

Swear filter cleverly avoided there!
|
On a related note - it appears the First Leeds adverts have vanished from the buses and stops. Presumably the ASA got in touch, as I distinctly remember feeling a bit miffed as I sat in a bus, in a traffic jam, staring at an advert that read: "AVOID THE JAMS! TAKE THE BUS!"
Prices have gone up by 20p in the last 6 months but, on the bright side, it's now free to take a dog on the bus.

I wish the other First bus companies would do the same. My dog still has to pay 40p when takes me on a bus.

OK bad boy, I'll rephrase that: "when he takes me travelling on a bus".
That should stop you getting jealous ;-)

So it's YOU that was causing the trouble on Bowring Park last week Stuart?

I loathe and detest public transport!
Why is is that when I am at the bus stop....head of the queue....bus comes along and millions of other people appear from shop doorways to barge past to get on bus. Not a single person queue's anymore....except me! Why are bus and train seats made for people with small bottoms? Why do I have to listen to the tst...tst...tst of countless iPods when I want to travel and read in peace. Why do most blokes think that they are Linford Christie and have to sit with their knees 6 foot apart. "Hello? hello? yeah, geezer, mate. Watcha it's me I'm at Newbury Park. Yeah ok geez' see ya there" at the top of his voice on his Nokia. Trains with the heating still on in this weather, everyone gathered in the door area not moving along the aisle, smelly pits and breath, dirty builders feet on seats. Filthy windows you can't see out of
Sorry, someone slap me....then I'll stop
Thank heavens I retire next year!!!!!

Adski et al, I was joking but obviously I should stick to being crotchety old f---t. Well that won't be too difficult :-))

Next time, make your comments more barbed and make sure they're dripping with sarcasm.

[first post]
I remember seeing on the BBC London News recently that a new Bus Terminus (not Victoria Coach Station) was rebuilt in the London area at a cost of several millions of pounds (£20m seems to ring a bell) - however the piece showed that it didn't do the one thing they should do - keep you out of the weather when waiting!!
Its nice to know where your hard-earned cash is going!!
