Re: Fiat Panda Bo-Selecta!! - Pete
Thank you for your reply. Can I take it from your response, that you have some hands on experience of these boxes ? Thank you.
Re: Fiat Panda Bo-Selecta!! - T lucas
My only experience of these cvt boxes was with some low mileage ex-mobility Rover Metrots,3 cars,3 non functioning cvt gearboxes within 3 months.Put me of anything with a cvt gearbox forever.[forgot to mention earlier problem with Ford cvt 'box.]Now when i'm offered anything with cvt i run away as fast as i can.
Re: Fiat Panda Automatic. - Lekas
Not exactly what you ask, but the CVT box in my Punto (11 months, 11,400 miles) has caused no problems to date.
Re: Fiat Panda Automatic. - Honest John
Sadly, a Panda CVT with a duff autobox is a Micawber Machine. Value of car: roughly £400. Cost of repairing transmission: easily £600. Result: misery.

Thank you all for your input.

To Lekas, your Punto will have the later redesigned ECVT box, this works on similar princple but is not the same as the Panda box.

Could I now please draw everyones attention back to my original posting.
Any input much appreciated. Thank you.
Fiat Panda Automatic Technical Info - David Lacey
I think you are going to struggle to obtain any info on this box, Pete.

The ZF CVT Box used by MG Rover is so complex it is classified as non-serviceable by Dealership Technicians, to this point there is NO technical info available to us.

Gearbox Specialists seem to be able to cope with them - I wonder where they have gleaned their information from?

Kind regards

David

It's the multi layer steel belt that seems to be the weak point. If this belt disintegrates (it's made up of loads and loads of small steel segments) the bit go everywhere, scrapping most of the high precision internals. Believe me, I have seen the internals of a ZF CVT Box after a belt shattered.

A real mess.

Kind regards

David

Re: Fiat Panda Automatic Technical Info - careful driver
info obtained from stripping them a few times etc

i dont know much about them other than chatting to an auto repair place that specialised in reconditioning them when i had mine done

apparently there isnt that much in them but the belts and pulleys

pulleys snap and tend to damage the gearbox case in the process...

if it wasnt for the damge the snapped belt caused replacing snapped belts would be pretty straighforward

car companies like them cos they are cheaper to make than trad auto boxs, can be made lighter etc - so leading to better mpg figs... however you are far better off with a good trad auto box...

Hello Careful Driver.
Do you say that you have actually dismantled one of these boxes and have first hand experience of the internals ? If so, would you please contact me direct on petel@clara.co.uk. Thank you.
