96 2.0 Rear Center Inertia Reel Seatbelt - parkender
Hi

I've just bought a 1996 (P) Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X. The center rear inertia reel seatbelt is jammed. Apparently there is a mechanism which locks the reel so you can't use the seatbelt if the folding seatback is not fully locked home (the inertia reel is inside the seat). I've tried slamming it in a few times and this seems to make no difference. Does anyone know how to remedy this problem without destroying the seatback?

This is occaisionally sticky on my '02 Ghia X though is remidied by folding the relevant part of the seat back forward then closing it again making sure that the latch is fully engaged, on mine their is a red indicator to let you know that the latch is not engaged fully.

Thanks - I've just tried this but the belt is still stuck - I've read elsewhere that a good slam might do the trick - I'll let you know how I get on.

Apparantly you have to slam the seat back really hard according to the info in this previous thread.

Well I've tried slamming the seat back into place but this has not solved the problem. I've had a play with the catch in the seat back and it has 2 definite positions - the 2nd one operates the cable to release the seatbelt - however, this still will not release the belt. I have managed to get my hand inside the seatback to the inertia reel but can feel no way of adjusting the cable - is there a way? This may be a seat strip down job on Saturday!

Make sure the car is on level ground when slamming the rear seat back shut. IIRC there's a ball bearing in there that locks the belt on decelleration.

Yes,there is a bowden cable system that prevents the belt from reeling out unless the backrest is locked fully home.Unfortunately access to is is very awkward. You will need to remove the seat back from the car & carefully "peel off" the seat covering material, this will expose the foam backing & the inertia reel & cable mechanism. The cable works against a metal lever that locks the reel. The seat belt inertia reel is held to the back part of the seat by 1 torx head bolt. You can locate the bolt by running your finger done the back of the seat until you feel a recess/dimple.(in line with belt run).
