Engine warning light is illuminated steadily. SWMBO says it simply came on when driving.A little red engine sign indeed.
Can not see any problem, and the car is running well.
Car is needed daily - is this an emergency situation?

If the car is running well with oil up to the mark on the dipstick, has had oil and filter changes at regular service intervals, and not burning oil excessively, I would not be too concerned as these engines are nigh bomb proof.
It is probably a small electrical problem of no major sinificance.
|
What does the 323 Users Handbook say about this light illuminating? I would find it hard to believe it were a major problem because of the bullet-proof nature of these engines. The 323 has been the only car to achieve a breakdown-free rate for 3 consecutive years on the annual Which? car reliability survey.

Says take it to the dealer. 1.6l, 2001 reg.
Light has gone out again! All fluids and belts present and it has only done 35k.

It could just be a wire earthing somewhere. I once left part of the wiring loom on part of the engine, the heat melted the plastic insulation and the brake-warning light would flicker on and off whenever I went around a corner!
|
323 model year 2001 1.6ltr engine....same as my car...does your power steering system hiss as well? I have yet to find another owner of a 323 that complains of this problem which Mazda claims is a characteristic.
|
Not noticeable when on the move .
But yes - if you wind the lock on at a standstill or low speeds a noise occurs. A loud Zizzing?

Thanks for replying...this sounds like someone has opened a fizzy drinks bottle (a shhhhhhhhhhhh noise!) and only occurs when the car is warm. Very noticeable when on the move. Apart from that the car has been fault free. Pity Mazda won't fix it (don't believe they can't) because it takes the edge off of what is a good car. A characteristic they say...what a load of rubbish!

Going back to the original message on this thread of the 323 engine warning lamp.
My 3.5 year Mazda 323 has also started to immuniate its engine check lamp. It happened last weekend, and remained on for the next 80-odd miles. Then I parked the car and went back 20 mins later and the light went out!
This evening, the lamp has illuminated again - so looks like it's back to a Mazda dealer to get it sorted.
Did the original author - Glaikit Wee Scunner - have any more surprises from the egine check lamp?

The engine light came on again a few weeks ago briefly but has been extinguished since. SWMBO is reluctant to take it to a garage.
Seems to be running fine.

Hi...I did take it to a Mazda dealer and they hooked it up to the diagnostics machine and it reported the knock sensor was at fault. Replaced the sensor and engine light hasn't come back on since. Cost £114.
|
Knock sensors are piezo quartz that sense specific vibration, and tell the Electronic Control Unit when the engine is 'pinking'. If this occurs the ECU will automatically retard the ignition timing for whichever cylinder is required accordingly.
This is why you did not notice any loss of performance or fault in driveability.
|
SWMBO tok her car to a trusted little man in a local garage.
No visible loose connections or problems. Not convenient to be without a car. Will not book into a main dealer- unless a bigger problem appears. Car runs fine.
