Premium diesel oil - legacylad
Have recently acquired a 2.4 5cylinder diesel VW Transporter off a friend, which is 8 years old with 84k on the clock, serviced in a variety of places. I intend to run it for 3 years plus, with 20k miles pa, meaning 3 annual oil changes. At this age, should I use fully synth diesel oil, such as Halfords own, or any cheap stuff from my local factors? Will the better oil prove beneficial long term to the engine longevity. Presumably it makes no difference to mpg...my only concern is reliability as I cannot afford a newer vehicle in the foreseeable future.
Thanks

I would have thought a decent semi-synthetic oil changed very regularly (5-6K) would be the best bet...

I've recently sold my 10 year old VW Vento 1.9LD with 175,000 on the clock, I followed the instructions on the box (car handbook) and put the correct spec. oil in with a new filter every 5,000 as recommended for this engine type, and experienced no problems. I used oil from the supermarket (Carplan 15W/50) and filters from Eurocarparts/local parts shop.
This engine also ran smoother on Shell diesel and got a couple more miles per gall.

Hope this is of some help.
