Garage's Hourly Rate - johndunstan
Hi,

I am a new poster on this forum and I thought that you could help me with a small question

I have a Volvo S80 and my main dealer is quoting £65 per hour + vat to work on it, does that seem normal to you guys or a little high?

Also do you know any good independants in either Leicester or B'ham that could work on my car, if so a rough hourly rate?

Cheers

John

seems high to me.

i use a superb garage in yorkshire (not much use to you!) even though i live in the south - go up every couple of months to see family and get the car serviced at the same time. it's saved me a fortune over the years. was quoted £330 for a 36k service by my local dealer - got it done in yorks for £170..

i imagine there might be an effect on 2nd hand price of some cars if serviced at an independent but i don't think my car is one of them!

It's a fair point though, I don't really care about the resale (it's already done 110,000 miles) but for that price difference you could drive upto Yorkshire, get your car serviced and have a days shopping on the money you've saved!

Doesn't seem massively high - i work for a toyota dealer in the midlands and our labour rate is £73 per hour in vat.

Will probably be half that rate at an independant though

Some in the London area are up to £85 an hour+.I did see one garage.Forget which one £90+..independands can be less than half.Mind you they need the work and most give better service. If they didnt these days they would not exist...

There used to be a Volvo independent in Leicester called the 'Viking Garage' - I assume he's still there? Check out your local yellow pages.

There was (is?) also a very good Volvo independent in the Polesworth area (near Atherstone) - not too far from Leicester. I sourced parts from him years ago, I know he was still going about 3 years ago so probably worth a bit of research.

There also was one in Derby called (IIRC) "Volsaa" or something like that - on the road heading toward the old BREL works. I remember buying Volvo bits off them when we were selling cars.

There are a couple recommended in Leicester area on HJs list

and I have had excellent service from
Eurocars,
Unit N,
Little Moor Lane,
Loughborough

Give them a ring (Jack or Dilip) Very reasonable labour rates (£30/hour?) and very helpful and friendly. Also work all day Saturday!

Or of course, you could nip over to France, go to main dealers, get charged £35/hour and stock up on booze at the same time??!

Or go to French independent and be charged ?30 an hour for routine work and have even more money to spend on booze!

I remember reading about the labour rates in France, it gets you thinking though, especialy if you had a major service or repair to do!

Thanks for all of your help thus far

I was interested in this thread, since I've just had a head gasket repair on my car, done under extended warranty - a 7 hour job. Turns out that the policy only covered labour charges of £40, which is ridiculous given the answers on here (and no, it doesn't specify that anywhere in the small print). The garage I used charges £65. As it happens the insurers quibbled over just about everything else too, so I came out of the experience a wiser (but bitter) woman.

You might even get stuck in Calais due to the strikes, you won't save so much then, but you could have a nice holiday.

Is it worth paying these rates in the first place? My experience with VAG, MB and BMW dealers is they charge a lot and provide a poor service. A trusted independent mut be the best deal.

Agree
my nearest BMW dealer - in Bristol - charges about £100 hour including the VAT ! so I now use an independent. Have to travel 30 miles to find a good one though but he gives a free loan car so its not too bad

I have just been in discussion with an independent garage in Lincolnshire, who specialises in braking systems, and his labour rate is £25/hour; I don'tknow if this is with ir without VAT but it sounds low compared with main dealer rates quoted above.

When I lived in Derby and ran a couple of Volvos, I used Volsaa for second hand parts. They also do servicing. No association, just remember using them.

They are at:

2-4 Fox Street,
Derby Derbyshire,

I drive a 2003 V70, and use Volvo Independent garage HLM in Bromsgrove for routine servicing. Visit their web site www.volvotuning.co.uk

£65 per hour is par for the course for a Volvo dealer. In fact, I recall reading that Volvo dealers have the highest labour rates of any brand sold in the UK. The one occasion that I used them, mine charged £75 per hour, plus VAT.

Sorry, I forgot to add: a routine standard service at HLM is about £180 all in compared to £250+ at my local Volvo dealer.
