My Megane RT Sport (98) with the K7M 1.6 8v engine sounds rather tappetty. I have noticed it had been noisier ever since I changed the headgasket a few months ago. The camshaft looks fine, and I tweaked the rocker clearance a little which made things a little better; but it is still too noisy. Has anyone any suggestions to what I could do? The engine runs fine, but I'm trying to sell the car, but this noise is not appealling to buyers.

Can I assume you replaced the cam belt and tensioner at the same time? If the belt is loose it can cause the valvegear to rattle as in effect the slack in the belt causes the camshaft to rotate in hundreds of little jerky movements, too fast to see. Recheck the belt tension then carefully check and adjust valve clearances. In the present temperatures I personally would set the clearances and belt tension with a slightly warm engine.

Thanks for the advice. I did change the cambelt and tensioner, so that could be a possibilty. I'll recheck the clearances, and check my feeler gauge with a micrometer too, in case that is out. Then I'll check the cambelt tension.
