Well...Last week I bought a lovely little Fiesta 1.25 Ghia, W reg with 29k on the clock. It's very tidy and I love it already.
But it's got to go - due to the fact that when I brake, my knee touches the steering wheel, and it's generally not very comfy. A shame as my '96 LX wasn't brilliant, but better. I thought the Ghia would be perfect.
So, it's got to go. :(
What else can I get? I'm thinking Mondeo - but I don't NEED a big car - so if there are any small cars that have the same comfort as big cars please let me know!

Can you not get a dished steering wheel from an accessory shop, if that's the only problem with the car?
|
It's not just that - I find the accelerator is too far in - it needs (or feels like anyway!) to be further out to the right.
It's strange...I'm not particularly tall at 6ft. Bu t I'm sure the seats in this don't go back as far as my mk4.

Mini Cooper or Mini Cooper S. I have just sold mine and it was brilliant. My husband is 6ft 1" and he had not problems at all. Its a brilliant car and good value to buy and resale. Of course this is my opinion.
|
Did you not realise these problems when you test drove the car?
Elizabeth - i am slightly jumping to conclusions but i've got a feeling a Mini may well not be within his budget if he is buying a used fiesta.

You can get some real bargains on these now if you buy privatly. The dealers are keeping prices high, however, a lot want to sell them privately at the moment as a lot are having new ones on 1st March. But like you say depends on what you have to spend.

I agree with elizabeth, lots and lots of room and great fun to boot. Worth checking it's got the height adjustable drivers seat though, not standard on all of them.

Ford Focus, but make sure that the seat shape of the variant you choose suits your body shape/condition.

L\'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Can you get the seat frame / runner modified? You should get used to the different offset pedals after driving for a while, most cars are different. Might be worth checking with another Fiesta to see if it's the same though!

so if there are any small cars that have the same comfort as big cars please let me know!
Try a current model Polo. Good seat - height adjustable, plenty of room in the footwell, left foot rest, and the steering wheel adjusts for reach and rake. Refinement is good as well....I had one.
One downside - mine had rubbish electrics and had to binned....

Skoda Fabia then. Same advantages but without the awful reputation for reliability. Although it shares many parts with the Polo, it was launched earlier so it's more likely to be in the right price range. Toyota Yaris is also worth a look although it's a bit smaller than the other cars mentioned.
|
Just get a nice big car. If you buy used you'll discover the curious situation whereby the older it gets, the closer to price it becomes to a small car, until you get to about 6 years old where a Mondeo or similar is actually cheaper to buy than a Fiesta or similar.
Sure, you don't need one. But then neither do I. I don't need a big Mondeo with leather seats, aircon and cruise control to pop into Uni and back every day, but I'll tell you what - its really nice. Lovely, comfortable, and if we all bought on basic need most of us would have 106 diesels.
|
I'd thoroughly recommend the Honda Jazz. It's got 10 times more space than the Toyota Yaris whilst still managing to be a compact little car. However because both the Yaris and the Jazz are fairly 'new' cars, are from reliable car manufacturers and are generally loved by their owners, it may be hard to get a 2nd hand one for a reasonable price.

Thanks people!!
Well I just smashed the Fiesta up so it's not really an issue!
Damn foglights blinded me and I ploughed into the back of someone.
So, Mondeos then - what are they like for reliabilty?
|
Bad luck! When the insurance cheque comes through a Mondeo will be a good choice.
Reliable (IMHO) and great to drive. Also there is no substitute for a big car around you loaded with airbags if you do have a prang. Look at the euroNCAP website at the picture of a Fiesta (same shape as yours) being crashed into a concrete block at 40mph and compare it to bigger cars.

Previous suggestion of Polo could be worth looking at.
I have a very tall brother who drives a new polo and he swears by it for comfort.
