Fuel system cleaners - Joe
The idle on my Renault Megane has become uneven. Does anybody have any experience with fuel sytem cleaners that can be added to the petrol tank? Are they any good?

Many thanks

Joe.

If you click search and type Fuel injector cleaner you'll find several recent posts regarding this.

More in relation to your problem, I think injector cleaner (which is 90 odd percent paraffin) is more preventative than an actual cure and I would imagine that the idle control valve on your car is probably dirty or sticking and more likely to be the root of the problem than anything that would be sorted out by FIC. I would recommend it, as if you read the previous post I placed on here regarding it, it did make the car run a little more smoothly and improve MPG but I don't think it'll solve the idling problem of the car.

I also had idle problems a few months back and this necessitated cleaning up all the throttle housing and replacing the idle control valve. Whether your car has one of these I don't know but am sure one of the more knowledgeable people here will point you in the right direction!

Good luck with it

Dunno. My old Rover was suffering from a slight hesitancy on tickover. I poured neat redex direct into the choke of my Rover and ended up with a prefectly even tickover.

Made a very satisfying cloud of white smoke as well!

The VAG fuel additive (part number G 001 700 03) solved my Audi's cool-running problems overnight, so I continue to use it in my Golf. The guy who did the emissions test for the MOT said the engine was as clean as a whistle, and attributed the very low readings to the additive. It's cheaper than the stuff from High Street stores, one plastic bottle costing about ukp4.00 and giving you enough shots for about 150 litres of fuel. Available from any VW or Audi dealer. I think HJ rates highly it too.

Yes I rate the VAG injector cleaner that comes in small three dose bottle. But don't get any on your hands. It's very nasty to skin.

Does anyone know the VW part number for this 3 dose stuff?

I asked in my local VW garage and then didn't know of any FIC. It's only when I ordered the G 001 700 03 (information that I?d previously acquired from here) that they knew it existed.

The G 001 700 03 has partially worked for me, now the problem is intermittent, so I?d like to try the stronger stuff.

Not sure what HJ means by "three dose bottle" -- perhaps "three fill-ups". The bottles I buy have 13 units marked, plus what's beneath the lowest mark and what's in the bottle's neck. Each unit is 10 ml; and, wakey wakey, I've just realized that the whole bottle is labelled 150 ml. You use 10 ml per 10 litres of fuel.

The main dealers who just serviced my Golf were unware of the product, except the one guy who recalled that I had ordered it in bulk last year. The other main dealer who serviced my Audi and failed to cure its cool-running problems was completely unaware of it. As I recall, it was in snail-mail correspondence with HJ that I was prompted to enquire about it at a VW dealership.

We use them extensively to alleviate running problems associated with dirty injectors and gummed/coked valves and upper cylinders. As previously mentioned most available over the counter are not as effective short-term as the product for professional use, i.e. Forte or Texaco, but once cleaned are good at maintaining clenliness. Incidentally the Forte product smells strongly of camphor rather than the alleged paraffin, any ideas?

Andrew

you suggested FORTE for worn valve stem seals but where can I buy it I have never come across it

Ask at a few local workshops for Forte Oil Seal Conditioner, about a tenner or email me and I'll send you some.
