After changing the pads on my mk 3 fiesta i have noticed the passenger side caliper piston does not seem to move when i put brake pedal down.
I was wondering if it is seized but i can lever it out with a screwdriver and push back with my hands.
I had this piston out of it's bore completely would this now therefore need to be bleed and hence causing the loss of use?
Many Thanks

I would bleed it. Does the pedal feel spongy at all? Any situation where you have had to mess around with the hydraulics must always be followed by bleeding. One man kits are available at Halfords for a few quid.

Thanks mfarrow, pedal is very spongy! I'l go get a kit this evening. MAny Thanks

Steve, it will most certainly need bleeding. To be honest, if you have to ask the question, do you really think that you should be working on a braking system ?
I work on combined air / hydraulic braking systems every day, and wouldn't dream of stripping a caliper down without overhauling it. (There is no other reason for stripping one down). This means proper cleaning and working facilities and OE repair kits.
I guess that you are trying to save costs by DIY. Good for you - but follow the Haynes manual to the letter, and if in doubt, get an expert to do it for you.

Thanks for the advise. I suspected it needed bleeding and was going to anyway wasn't sure if there was another underlying problem. I didn't intentionally remove the piston but while i had the new pads removed i pressed the brake pedal and the piston extended outwards i then easily removed it and pushed it back. I am now concerned whether this was right following your reply information. Could you please let me know, in your experience, if this is correct.

Mistake you made was to lever out the piston..It is rule of thumb to bleed after removal of any brake piston.ie air gets in and fluid is contaminated..Thing I would be carefull of now. Is. as you levered piston out.scoring of the cylinder. it may cost you a new caliper.I did say may as some get away with it.though not often

Thanks steve.
If I do need a new caliper do i need to replace as a pair or is it ok just to replace the one concerned.
|
Always replace as a pair..Same as brake pads..Also do a fluid replacement..As the fluid accepts air it will travel through system..causing no end of probs.

Try a caliper repair kit.. a few £s easy to fit. Replacement seals which it contains make all the difference. (I did it to only one side of son's Fiesta as only one in stock and other side was not leaking. No apparent problems in 10k miles since...
