Google - malteser
Firefox is my default browser which as many will know has Google as the built in search engine.
Perhaps unreasonably, it annoys me considerably that when searching Google, I am automatically connected to google.es. I know that Google's own preferences may be set to search for reults in a particular language, but very often I want to search google.com .I guess the language option is set by a cookie, but I regularly clean out cookies as a matter of habit. Even if I manually insert the .com in the address bar it changes to the Spanish address, (yes I am in Spain with a Spanish fixed I.P address), on activating the search.
Does any one know how to ensure that ALL Google searches to to the .com site?

Does installing Google.com or .co.uk from mycroft.mozdev.org/quick/google.html have any effect?

If not, the only solution I can think of is not to delete the Google cookie when you clear the rest.

If you click on the Google icon in the top right hand address bar you will get a menu up of a number of search engines - you can add as many others as you wish.

You could also add a direct google.com link on the bookmarks bar or, alternatively, in Bookmarks themselves - I have a folder of varius search engines which I find easier than the google address bar.

That sort of did it but not quite. I now have Belgian google in English (search "the web" or "pages from Belgium".)

The only things I want from Belgium are trappist beer and chocolates...

Changing the language interface in Preferences did the same. So did changing the choice of language on the main Google screen (Belgians get a choice of French. Nederlands or English). Deleting the google.com cookie didn't help.

Ah well, that can wait...

Roger,
I'm not sure if you are just using the Google search or the Google toolbar EXTENSION...

If it's the extension, then click the TOOLS menu > select EXTENSIONS, select GOOGLEBAR then click on the OPTIONS button.

Go through the 5 TABs and select English or United Kingdom where relevant.

If you are just using the search box on the NAVIGATION TOOLBAR, it may be due to your REGIONAL SETTINGS (from the CONTROL PANEL).

roger,

install and run the freeware
www.ccleaner.com/

tick the "delete index.dat" option.

your google should revert to the country you are in at your next visit to the web site.

(general note: the ability to specify any local google address seems to have been removed recently, and now google.com seems to automatically redirect to the country that you are connecting from, e.g. you get diverted to google.co.uk in the uk even though yu type in google.com in the address bar ).

McAfee asking for password on start-up? - PoloGirl
I've got McAfee installed on the new laptop.

Every time I start it up, it chunters away for ages (sometimes up to three or four minutes) before finally asking me to put in a password for the Privacy Service. Not only does this wait feel like forever, but I'm the only person who uses this laptop so I really don't need it.

I can disable Privacy Service once it's all started up and the password has been entered, but it asks for a password again the next time I switch on and re-enables itself.

How can I stop it asking every time? I've been through the options you get when you click on the red M in the bar at the bottom of the screen, but haven't found anything to make a difference.

(Please don't tell me to RTFM - I've packed it!)

Thanks!
McAfee asking for password on start-up? - Stuartli
See Page 13 of the manual from:

download.mcafee.com/products/manuals/en-us/MPS_Use...f

to find out how to disable Privacy Service.

You'll need Adobe Reader installed to be able to read the manual.

The manual can be saved to a Folder if you wish for future reference (Save a Copy link at top left of pages).

if you don't need it, you can uninstall just the privacy service on its own via
start/settings/control-panel/add-remove-programs

mcafee av 2005 (version 7 as a suite, av on its own is v9) is hungry for cpu resources.

as you have paid for it, i can understand you may want to keep mcafee av. otherwise, as renault family says, ditch it and go for free avast.

Hard drive in new computer? - Mike H
I've just removed the hard drive from an old computer, which is loaded with Windows 98SE. Question: if I fit this into another machine of similar vintage, will it work? I realise it will physically whirr round, but I mean in the sense of being an operational computer.
Hard drive in new computer? - smokie
Possibly, yes, after a fashion. Assuming the new computer spec contains nothing too exotic and the old PC was pretty standard too, and the computers were similar (but by no means identical) hardware then it might get through Windows start up, to the point where it recognises "new" hardware and requires the Windows CD to load hardware specific drivers. If you have the Windows CD then you should be able to get it working pretty well.

However, if you have the Windows CD then you would be much better to take Lee's panacea and use FDISK and start again...

Or it's simply extra storage you need, you could add the drive to your system as a second drive.

Hard drive in new computer? - mfarrow
Try it and see!

It may fall over when you try booting it, but it's not going to do it any harm having a go.

My own experiences of transfering disks from one PC to another:

Windows 3.1 - booted fine when upgraded from a 33MHz 386 to an AMD K6 166MHz with a couple of errors, non terminal.

Windows XP - forget about it: "Windows XP has detected a problem and has stopped booting in order to prevent damage to your computer. Try uninstalling any new HDD controller you have recently added." In other words, we're making sure you can't use the same installation of an XP disk on several machines, in order to make you pay for your software lisences... or reinstall.

98 shouldn't have the same kind of problems as XP has, but it's bound to be more troublesome than 3.1!

I can't work out how to establish whether I've got USB 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0. I've tried device manager but no reference to it - any ideas?

If it's a reasonably recent system it should be 2.0; however USB2 is fully backward compatible with earlier versions.

Yes, it was the first thing I tried but it didn't mention USB 2 - so I guess by default I haven't.
How do I know if I've got USB 2.0? - Altea Ego
"however USB2 is fully backward compatible with earlier versions"

Indeed a USB1 device will happily work in a USB2 port.......

BUT

A USB2 (only and there are quite a few appearing) will not work in a USB1 port.

So before you buy anything USB, check if its USB1&2 or USB2 only.
How do I know if I've got USB 2.0? - Stuartli
A USB2 device will work in a USB1 or 1.1 port - it will merely run/transfer at the slower speed.

However, as you say, there are a small number of native USB2 only devices that apparently will not.

Changing Cookie name for IE - Chas{P}
On my late father?s fairly elderly PC I noticed the cookies that are being left on websites are, for example, ?mr_sirname@honestjohn.co.uk?.

charles: the name is that which has been used to register windows and other various software on the pc.
you need to edit registry with any suitable editor-software that you may have, but the built in regedit will also do the job fine.

proceed with caution - registry edits are not to be undertaken unless you have a meticulous approach, and you mess with it at your own risk. i am not an expert.

but here is is my suggestion:

to change the name, go to
start/run/
type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and press ok button.

click on registry menu at the top, select export registry file, in the pop-up window select the all button at the bottom, then selct a location, and give it a name such as "prior to name changes", and save the file. (in case you muck up the registry).

then in regedit's "edit" menu, select "find" (same as ctrl+f )
and enter the name that you want to change.
search for all instances of this name, (using find next)
and wherever you find them, highlight the key, select "modify" and change every key value to the new anonymous name.

exit regedit, and re-boot.

Changing Cookie name for IE - Stuartli
Cookies are on your system, not a website - the website places (or you bar!) a cookie. Most are harmless.

I presume that in this case these are usernames and/or passwords?

If so, there's usually the facility to delete your account(s) and/or start a new account with a revised username of your choosing.

You should also upgrade asap to the superior Internet Explorer 6 and add the updates released since its launch - even better is to switch to Firefox (and Thunderbird for e-mails) from the Mozilla website. These are far more secure safety wise than the MS products.

You can export the IE and OE settings during installation or afterwards as preferred.

Cheap SAT NAV - carl_a
I know that the Aldi/Lidl Medion SAT NAV has been a popular topic in the past and I've now seen it for an even lower price. Any BR's that live near Bromsgrove (Junction 4 & 5 M5) may be interested to know that Medion 250PDA with GPS and Navigation Software is on Sale for £224.99 this weekend at Halford in Bromsgrove (new store opening offer). Seems to be 10% off everything else too.
Cheap SAT NAV - Stuartli
The Medion satnav range models are rebadged products from specialist manufacturers (Medion doesn't actually manufacture what it sells, a common feature of many companies the computer world) - if you look closely at the Hewlett Packard and other makes' similar satnav products you'll spot the resemblance.

IIRC HP satnav devices are also rebadged...:-)

Internet problems - L'escargot
By no stretch of the imagination could I be called computer literate, but my solution was to increase the time before disconnection automatically occurs. The default time may be, say, 20 minutes.

At the top of the screen, click on "Tools".
In the drop down menu, click on "Internet Options".
Click on "Connections".
Click on "Settings".
In Dial-up settings, click on "Advanced".
Where the box is checked "Disconnect if idle for x minutes", increase x to the maximum ~ on mine this is 59 minutes.
Uncheck the box which says "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed".

so setting your disconnect if idle box unchecked, will still disconnect after 2 hours.

As far as being disconnected is concerned, it happens on broadband too. It happens frequently with our current broadband service. At least we can reconnect quickly, which wasn't the case when we were with another ISP when we had dial-up. Their service became an increasing nightmare.

The reason is most likely to be that your Back Room log on period has timed out; there must have been occasions when you have had to log on again even though you are on this website.

Easiest way to make sure your posting is successful is to type it, do a copy (highlight all the text and then Control+C it).

Send as usual and, if you have been logged out, you can then use Control+V to reinsert what you typed earlier and resend after logging on again.

Ignore the advice about setting the idle timeout to 20 minutes - best left limitless, choose redial after five seconds and, say, make 10 attempts to connect (this relates to initial connection to your ISP). Also ignore other settings as they relate to a particular ISP.

That Dell again - frostbite
Having failed to find more than one COM port to use, or get the beast to dial out on any modem out of several on the USB ports, I am wondering if there is such a thing as a SERIAL connecting ADSL modem?

Thinking behind this, is that the serial dialup modem I tried works perfectly.
That Dell again - DavidHM
There's not likely to be, as the maximum bit rate of RS232 (serial) is likely to be well down on the speed that broadband supports. If one does exist, by some miracle, it will be pretty expensive.

However, assuming TCP/IP on the Windows isntallation isn't totally hosed (unlikely but certainly possible) then this, for £23 delivered, looks ideal. You may also need to add an Ethernet card if there's not one on the motherboard.

tinyurl.com/4ls4k

It needs no drivers as it will be configured using the browser, and also includes a hardware firewall, so the internet connection will be much more secure.

If you do need a network card, pop down to PC World and spend £4.99 on the PC Line one - product code 685029 - as they're all pretty generic and there's no postage to pay that way.
That Dell again - buzbee
The one I suggested below is able to use the USB (serial) port, (or ethernet)and so I did not have to buy and fit an ethernet card. It too has a hardware firewall that is set 'on' by default. (I also use the zonealarm firewall as it lets me know what, on the PC, is trying to get access to the web and I can shut that down -- Several of those useful little programs I have installed)

It also has a nice console, allowing me to test the telephone line speed, line noise etc. and that could save me money in fault tracing [if I get one] by avoiding a false call out when the line is OK) But it costs! Close to £70 with the VAT.

May be your £23 suggested one has this too? I don't have enough experience of the various ones available to know this. I did see, when I looked it up, that you must download and install its latest software and enable the firewall, which is off by default. It certainly looks a good buy at £23.
ADSL USB modems - buzbee
I have had an ADSL 'Zoom X5' USB modem-router in use for 3 months (PC World), using 98SE, plugged into a Gigabyte boarded single PC and am pleased with it. I chose it because it was well rated for ease of install and there were no reports like "it was alright after I downloaded new software", and it could use either a USB or an Ethernet input.

Just as well because my motherboard's Ethernet port turned out to be a dummy -- I needed something like a /R after the board's type number for it to have been active.

It has a power switch button on the back. So it is easily made inactive when I disable my firewall to install new software, or go to inspect the spam.

If you buy Zoom, choose the X5, not the lesser model.

I didn't have a lot of luck with the manufacturer of the Infra-red device after emailing them again.

I did consider flashing the bios to update it, but after emailing www.pcservicecall.co.uk, (who provide the warranty for my pc), they "think it is a hardware incompatability with the USB root hub, the actual chip, and not related to the bios. Therefore a bios update would not solve the problem. This means that this device will not be able to be left connected to the USB port when booting. There is nothing that can be done other than trying to install a USB PCI card which may or may not work."

Thanks to all the suggestions given in volume 40, but I have now gone ahead and ordered a usb bluetooth dongle instead. I'll now only use the infra-red device for my old Nokia 8310 - which won't be very often, if ever.

I hope not. Leaving the printer, scanner, broadband modem & digital camera lead plugged into the usb ports doesn't cause any problems. Only that pesky infra-red device.

Tried to install Win 2000 on my computer this weekend (currently running Win 98SE) but it wouldn't have it. Everytime I had to restart it gave an error message to the effect of not being able to find the hard drive, or it not being bootable. This even occured using a bootable CD with a reformatted drive (under Win 98 mind). I was getting a bit hacked off after the 3rd reformat and install of 98, so have stuck with that for now. Hopefully there is nothing really simple that I have missed :-((

Win2k was the operating system of choice of many many offices throughout the world and is considered a good OS. However why anyone would want it on a home PC is not clear! It really isn't good at anything non-standard (as many home PCs are)

I run it. By far and away the most stable and I've tried everything.

Mind you, I like tinkering around with networks (helps with Uni) so I guess 2000 is the best for this. (and NT)

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Doing a bit of a net search it seems there is a known conflict between Win 2K and the Asus A7V m/board with Promise IDE controller I have (surprise, have already banged my head on the wall several times with this controller). Didn't want to go to XP as it's 'only' an Athlon 700 with 320Mb. Win 98 seems much better without the accumulated 5 years of baggage....

Does that include XP Pro?

This is certainly the most stable (after 3.1!) OS I've ever used and even the doom and gloom merchants' misgivings over SP2 have been proved wrong (a number of times over as I updatd quite a lot of systems).

I only ever ran XP Pro Stuart. Interestingly, my Sister's computer ran XP Home for years without a hitch as does Mum's laptop now.

Quite clearly I'm from the dark ages in this respect.:-)

Alright Stu put it this way. Any computer I get the say so on has 2000 whacked on it. The others (sister and Mum have the final say so!) get whatever they want on. I like a quiet life!

hi, win 2000 that I have (stored, I now use XP Pro) Requires initiating with "startup discs" there are 4x 1.44 floppies. I didn't know you could install just from the CD.

As for XP, my laptop runs very well on it! Dell 750Mhz 256Mb ram. I use it for navigation, Autoroute with input from a Garmin GPS, Up until last new year, when I stopped, I was using the laptop for all the music for my disco, without any hicup.

Xp has been the only OS that I haven't had to FDISC and reload every now and then due to blue screen or other Micro$oft induced ailments. The best thing that has been included in XP is the "system restore" facility. Sorts wayward programs and operator "error"!!!

>>The best thing that has been included in XP is the "system restore" facility>>

XP is not the first to have a "system restore" facility - Windows 95, 98 and 98SE had the means to go back to a previous registry point (one of five which could be increased if desired).

Not a lot of people knew that though...:-)

Certainly saved me a lot of messing about on more than one occasion.

Here are details of how it was done from bootup:

If I was going to be pedantic, I could point out that a lot of MS-DOS upgrades, and any half-decent software/hardware driver, would backup MS-DOS crucial files such as config.old and autoexec.old so you could restore them at a later date. In fact DOS 6.2 (maybe even earlier) had a restore facility if you didn't like the new OS. But I'm not feeling pedantic, so I won't.

If I was also going to be pedantic, I could point out that you have strayed slightly from the point of the original comment i.e. System Restore in XP.

But I'm not feeling pedanti either...:-)

BR slow to reload - J Bonington Jagworth
I've been away for a while, and notice now that every time I go back to the main discussion page, it appears to reload from scratch, i.e. without reference to the cache. This appears to be the case in IE, Opera and Firefox - is there a way round it, or am I missing something obvious? It slows things down for those of us still on ye olde dial-uppe...
BR slow to reload - Phil I
Probably your settings for Cache need adjustment JBJ. Go Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Cache and take your pick . At the moment you probably have selected "Never"

Keep filling the hubcaps:-)) PhilI

I use Firefox and it always brings up the latest main discussion page on this site and in double quick time when I leave a topic.

On most sites going back to the main page usually brings up the one you originally left and it has to be Refreshed/Reloaded; I prefer the HJ instantly updated version.

Likewise, except when it's busy you keep going back to '1 new message' showing on the topic you've just read! And on, and on....
