I have been stupid.i have swapped a 1 1/2 yr old mini cooper which was in perfect condition.except for an annoying rattly dashboard ..for a 5 yr old BMW 318 ci..and now i have a big problem.
when i start the car from cold..ie after an all night stop.
the car starts and sounds like a true BMW.but after the oil has warmed up.it starts to have a clicking sound from around the tappets area. if i then stop the car ,and go back to it,,say 10,20,30 minutes later.when i restart it,,there is an awful tappetty sound for a second or two..then it goes.if i let the car cool again for hrs..it will then sound good again.
i have changed the oil 3 times in a month.i didnt trust the garage to put in the correct oil when i bought it.
i have used 0w 30...5w 30...15w 50[to thicken it]
now i am back on 5w 30..all being fully synthetic.i have not changed the filter once.the whole thing sound clicky wheezy when at its fully warm temps.it drives fantastic,,and looks great..it just starts like a diesel...can any1 give me a ball park figure for a new set of hyraulic lifters incl labour???
that is what i think is wrong....any1 help me???

They have them on ebay in Germany, do a worldwide search for
"Hydrostößel Satz BMW"
They are very cheap, and BMW's OE manufacturer - FEBI Bilstein.
If you don't want the hassle, you can get FEBI ones from Euro Car Parts, try their website.
Labour would be a few hours.

thx for that info...
does any1 else agree with my diagnosis????
after writing it,,i thought maybe it could be the timing chain ??maybe not tensioned enough when warm???
or even the oil pump with not enough pressure???
all the sounds are from the top of the engine...and it is a rattle rather than a click from the injectors..
all help would be grateful.....

Sounds like it could be the lifters - cam may also be shot. Its hard to know without hearing it and taking a look in there. Car could have been starved of oil in the past or had some other problem.
The old BMW M30 engines used to suffer oil starvation to the cam resulting in worn cam - sounded like a helicopter when hot!
Cams and lifters aren't too dear, but then labour will be the killer - £600+ at a guess?
I think a bit of further investigation is needed - possibly take it to an 'independent' for some diagnosis?
|
Actually, thinking a bit more, it is more likely cam wear. Duff lifters usually clatter when cold and then gradually quieten off once they heat up and free off. Worn cams, on the other hand, tend to get noisier as the oil thins out (hotter). Either way, it really means a top-end rebuild. What's the mileage?
|
42000....but the previous owner had a caravan...i have been past his house a few times!!!
|
Hmm... Not many miles at all.
Caravan towing wouldn't result in any top-end engine problems. Might cause rear suspension wear and give an auto transmission a hard time - but top end of engine wouldn't know about it.

i will have to take it to an independant...then go back to the garage i bought it from...altho the warranty is really a worthless piece of paper...they neva cover wear and tear items!!
i will just threaten them with the papers :)
i have tried a thick oil..but it didnt really help...
just the warmer it gets,,,the more ticky it is...
..it dont do it when revving or under load,,,just when not under load
oh well,,i will take it to a garage and let you know
|
in the end,,the independant bmw specialist said i should use
wynns hydraulic tappet cleaner..
and it worked !!!
|
Well, keep an eye on it. Sticky hydraulic tappets usually stick when cold and free up when warm. Your clatter came on as the car got warm - so I am puzzled. See how it goes anyway.
|
YOU ARE CORRECT about your views,,,
however,,we have traced the rattle to................the blooming starter motor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when i made the assumption about the cam/lifters etc..it was because i heard the lifters at start up
the other noise ,,when listening from inside the car with the window down,,sounds the same,,,but when at the garage and stood there with the technician...well....needless to say i felt like a bit of an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!
but i had to be truthful with you!!
swearing amended. Next time I delete as it's far easier and quicker. DD

Hi-
I have 02 plate E46 318ci 2dr coupe manual. It looks lovely but osunds dreadful!
When i start in it the morning- regardless whether its hot or cold- it sounds like a tractor! Like a grinding rattling noise coming from the engine- Sounds a bit like a distorted machine gun! Its horrible and embarisin! It doesnt do it after 2500rpm, but wen pulling off in 1st gear and sometimes in 2nd gear it sounds worse than a diesel sound (No disresepct to diesel cars!)
I have been told it could be the timing chain? Or the oil pump? Or the tensioner? Is this true and if so is this a difficult job to do?! Do i need to replace parts or can they be fixed? And is it going to be costly for the parts?
I do not need to worry about labour though- just need to know if it definately that?
Are there any possabilities it could be? Seems to be a common problem by the sounds of it- but have had so many different ideas that it could be- i dont want to pay out for it to get done?!!? lol!
Help me please!
