I have been told that Andy Bairstow is an expert on the idiosyncracies of the XM. I have been advised that there is a possible problem with the non turbo 16valve 2.0litre engine..if unmodified.due to poorly designed pistons. Can you tell me if this problem was fixed by Citroen under warranty recall? I am interested in purchasing a 1994m MK11 with 80000miles on the clock with FSH.
Would this be a safe bet,or are these cars particularly troublesome. PS
The car is a 5 speed manual. I would appreciate your advise .Cheers M Hirons

Michael,
Yes these engines did have a problem, see the car-by-car breakdown on this site.
What happened was that Citroen would sort the problem under warranty if you complained enough, if the engine was really noisy and if it was within a sensible mileage.
The theory now is that any engine reaching 60,000 miles plus and still staying quiet will be OK.
These are super cars but can be very troublesome if you are unlucky. The Mk.II is said to be better and also many in the club say post 1996 will be even better.
An old petrol one of these needs to be very cheap. £1000 or less for a good cash buy.

i have seen these cars in the local paper going for about £1000 with FSH, 80,000 - 100,000 miles, and about 1994 (L). but about £1500 gets a 1996 model.

Could it be that Citroens are great as a hobby, not so good as boring transport?
|
Could be, but you could say that about some of the exotica as well. I think Citroen do boring as well as ayone else, depends which model you go for.

Thanks for your comments much appreciated..so much so that I dont intend to pursue this particular car,and will look for something more local to me ( Exeter Area)
