Underpowered Fiesta mk4 1.25 zetec - Graham385
Hi there,

Having some trouble with my fiesta mk4 1.25 zetec

The car is lacking significant power, it seems really underpowered when pushed (ie. at full throttle, it seems strained/restricted).

When i say lacking I mean if I floor it in 2nd gear the car will crawl up the rev range and will not rev over 5000rpm. If I have a clear dual carriage way and accelerate in 3rd gear I will usually run out of road before it will get to 70mph.

Hills make this even more apparent, on 4th and 5th gear climbs I find myself dropping down to third and not accelerating.

I have noticed when in say 3rd gear going up hill at around 3000rpm and over, I can hear a rattling type sound.

The car idles fine and seems ok when not pushed, and doesn't make any tappety noises. The car will also rev freely as if normal when sat in neutral.

There is also a clear short, sharp sucking noise when the throttle is blipped just before it revs is this normal? Didn't notice it before, but it doesn't sound like a normal induction noise.

I have changed/checked:

Spark plugs, HT leads, fuel filter, vaccum hoses, sensor connectors, throttle body gaskets, inlet manifold gaskets.

Diagnostics show no failed sensors but reports the error code P1270 (Engine RPM Or Speed Limiter Reached) this error re-occurs when cleared dispite revs kept below 5000rpm. I was told this was possibly a faulty cam sensor which we have replaced.

Cheers

Have you checked the airfilter? Whilst it would not cause the error code the following thread reveals some ne ideas and the source of my problems.

Have a laugh at my expense...

The last post will be the most useful.

If the cat has blocked due to failure. It prevents exhaust breathing. Meaning exhaust gases cannot escape. this then causes a severe back pressure ie exhaust gases are pushed back into cylinder.being inert gases.engine comes to a stop.Or is restricted due to partialy blocked cat..I may have missed something in your post. but from what you mentioned you seem to have covered it all????

Hello.

I may be wrong but if it is the cat and it is left can it (operative word) Cause a fire eventually

Cats can be checked at Some service centres and even replaced (cheaper than fords but obviosly not the same quality)

Get the cat checked asap.

Quick test for blocked exhaust is to remove the lambda sensor, nice n easy on the exhaust manifold then take it for a quick whizz, you will know instantly if thats the problem. If it proves so work from the back forwards removing sections of the exhaust, you may find it is the rear or middle silencer which has collapsed rather than the cat. Checkout the prices at your main dealer before visiting fastfit bearing in mind the dealer part will last longer by far than a pattern part.

Thanks to everyone who have responded so far. It looks as though most agree it's the cat / exhaust. I'll have a look at this tomorrow....fingers crossed!!

Hi Chaps,

A quick point, a complete exhaust from back up to the cat, a Motorcraft/Ford spare, supplied and fitted at a ford main dealer Rapidfit centre can be had for approx £114. Not sure about price of the cat.

Pastyman...

Many thanks to all who responded to my problem. The problem was a partially blocked back box creating back pressure. Replaced central & Back box and car runs like a dream. Thanks again.

Hi

Is the Fiesta still OK?

I have EXACTLY the same symptoms but my local exhaust centre says the exhaust is OK. The local dealer wants to fit a fuel pump at a cost of 450 which makes me wince..

Thanks In advance

Dave

If your symptoms are exactly the same [even down to the rattle] then the cat would be my first check. Just bump it with your hand [cold] and see if it rattles. Any chance you've had bad fuel?

I do wonder what the OP's back box was blocked with - bits of cat?
