vauxhall astra van 1.7 dti - plumber
i purchased an astra van 20 months ago for 12 grand on a 52 plate that had 5 miles on the clock. i have now clocked up 135000 and need to get rid. it is in very good condition and runs very good too, what price should i be looking to ask for it private or dealer

Sounds like the Sportiv model, at that price??

So maybe £3,500 if it's mint. You'll need to confirm the VaT situation, with whoever buys it - a private man won't want to add £500 to whatever you ask for it.Take care if trying to avoid this, 'cos H M Customs & Excise, could come back to you, if you've tried to be clever!!

What are you swapping it in for - main deaers are doing VERY good deals on new prices, so, you'd be best at looking for the 'cost to change'. ie, just how much £$£$£ it is costing to go from the old van, into the new one.

& could be worth checking with your accountant, to make sure you've had the van depreciated into 2, or perhaps 3 of your financial years, to get best tax benefit.

What are you getting next? Guessing you're a courier, so another Astra would be still, the nearest car like drive. The spec on them now is VERY good!!

courier ? plumber ??

Should have said 'part time courier' otherwise it'd have another million miles on it!!

But like I did say, look for the 'cost to change' figure. The old van, a couple of years back, may have been valued against a top priced, newer one!

3.500 isnt much i part exchanged a t reg 1.7 td with 160000 on the clock to a vauxhall dealer that had its front end rebuilt after a smash up,and got 3.200, only 2 and half years ago.

True, but you did pay £12.5k for the van you were buying. At that price you could have haggled most of that £3,200 off if you'd shopped around.

£3,500 or so sounds like a reasonable amount to me.

Any particular reason why you want to change? Is it simply the end of the warranty? If it's been reasonably well looked after you might be better off simply running it into the ground - losing £4.5k a year means it's only got to last another nine months before you can scrap it while costing you less than the depreciation on a new one.

Are the figures you're quoting inclusive or exclusive of VAT?

12K does sound a lot for a car derived van (small van).

The Primastar cost £10,900 plus vat new (LWB Transit sized).

As David says, you must be able to shop around for a better deal this time. Try Vans Direct www.vansdirect.co.uk
