NCB discount rip off? - Miller
Tried a few insurance companies web sites for quotes over the last couple of days. Got a quote off direct line which came to £550, I thought that was a bit steep for my group 6 car, when I realised I had forgot to put in my no claims bonus (5 years), so I re-did the quote expecting it to come out at around £250 (assuming 60-65% discount for 5 years no claims.)

Yet, it quoted me nearer £350, a discount of around only 40%! I tried a couple of other sites and again, the difference in quotes for no discount as opposed to 5 years was only 40-45%.

So much for the 65% off that most companies claim to give for having full no claims. Also don't fall into the "Get a 10% discount for buying online", the last policy I took out was actually cheaper quoted over the phone than online from the same company, they are obviously trying to take advantage of peoples laziness to bother to ring around by telling you this.

Let us assum that you have been driving for 5 years with no accident.

You can be in the position of having NCD and therefore would resceive a discount of 60-60%.

However, you could have been driving a company car, someone else's car or some other means where you obtaind the experience without difficulty or claim, but didn't earn NCD as the policy was not in your name.

Under these circumstances most insurers will give what they call an introductory discount - this can range from nothing upto, typically, a maximum of 50%.

Without doing the maths, I expect that this woudl explain your findings.

Nope, every year done in my own car with me as only named driver, no accidents or convictions, and driving for nearly nine years (I'm 28).

Ah, but you didn't tell them that.....

Surprised at the high charge. Metro auto 1.3L IG4-5 Comprehensive 5 year discount protected NCB any driver over 25 incl. legals £185 from Forte via Budget website. (This year given free breakdown incl homestart). I mentioned this earlier has I was surprised how cheap.
Perhaps your motor a problem or the area you live in?
Re: NCB discount rip off? - Miller
I was'nt really bothered about the cost overall which was pretty much what I expected to pay when taking into account my age, car and area that I live in etc, it was the difference in the figures quoted for having either no no claims bonus or full no claims bonus.

The online quote systems have never been reliable, I always prefer to call.

Insurance companies seem keen to offer introductory no-claims/offers to get you as a first time insurer. I ended up with 50% discount to entice me in the end. This arose from holding a provisional for 8 years, the logic being that l must have been insured on my parents cars at some point...
Me "Will l have to show evidence that l was?"
Them "No"
Me "Well l was then"

Additional reductions from pass plus and another 10% on top to match their on-line offer. I can see that l'm going to be in for a shock when l renew my insurance and find they've added a nought to the end.

You haven't been ripped off. When you failed to enter your ncb first time you will have attracted an introductory discount ('cos you have had no claims) so when you came to enter your ncb you will have only received a discount below the previous (introductory) discounted price so the difference would not amount to 60% (or thereabouts).
