right.
seat arosa, 04 plate, 8000 miles, 1400cc 12 valve.
faults :
the manifold glows BRIGHT red after a short run.
there is a funny low down knock on pickup
it sometimes runs on 3 cylinders on the over-run
the EPC(what does that stand for) sometimes comes on
when i left foot brake :-) it looses all power !!!! fun in the wet !!!!!
any thoughts would be great, i have my ideas, but 2nd opinions are handy !!!!!!!!!

I would think you have a 1 or 2 cylinders misfiring causing unburnt fuel to enter exhaust system & thus glowing manifold & probably catalyst!!.Need to get it fixed promptly otherwise expensive damage could occur.
|
hmmm, but the manifold still glows red after a nice sensible run, even when she fires on all 4 for the duration !!!!
its still under man. warranty, so its going in soon, but wanted some expert advice as to the cause of the problem.

Long list of possibles includes:
retarded ignition
cam timing out
burnt out exhaust valve(s)
partially blocked catalyser or exhaust
plus anything else the more experienced can add...

I think the Seat will run on VW electronics. I think that the brake light switch is interlinked so that when you brake the engine returns to idle (to save fuel)
Try sitting in the car and revving, and then doing the same thing with your foot on the brake.
I agree with the others though, take it back and when they repair it ask for written evidence of what was done, so that you have a case for a goodwill payment if it results in a failure out of warranty

This sounds remarkably similar to my Fiesta.
The cat glowed red, made the car misfire and eventually caught fire becuase it had broken up and blocked. The only thing is, my car was N reg. Yours is considerably newer.

Is this a multi coil engine design and is the cause of the problem with one or more coils breaking down under load. Regards Peter

There was a known problem with VAG cat's where the spot-welds on the baffles were failing causing the baffles to detach.
Had this on my Passat at 50k - symptoms were a slight reluctance to rev and a light rattling noise which appeared to emanate from the area of the downpipe/turbo rather than the cat.
Your problem sounds more like valve timing though.
Do let us know - it's an unusual one.
|
it was found to be a major ECU failure, causing overfueling, and the timing is a mile out - new ecu ordered !!!!
wonder how much damage it had done already though ?????
|
Interesting...
I never knew an engine could keep going after the ECU malfunctioning! I'm glad my car hasn't got one!
