My 30 mths old 406 is fitted with this (2.0L petrol, low emissions) engine but it hasn't run properly all this year. The dealer says there's a problem with the unit that advances the valve timing (apparently it has VVT just like the Honda's). They change the unit but within a few wks it plays up again - misfire/hesitation under load. Even when it's 'fixed' it's still only 85% OK, and the engine always feels very 'flat'.
It's back the dealer again now. Has anyone any experience of typical faults with this engine? The dealer seems baffled & I'm on the verge of giving up with the car.

It seems that PSA gave up on the engine too. There have been quite a few comments in this forum about problems with this engine, particularly with regard to uneven running and misfires, etc.

Thanks for this. It's fixed now - it was the coil pack this time (the garage was convinced it was faulty plugs).
I queried it's lack of umph and the mechanic said that this engine doesn't come to life until it's over 3500RPM. This is certainly true, but you can't drive around with the engine screaming all the time.

I took one for a test drive once. It had only done 1900 miles and I liked it. It was much lighter on the front end than our 2.2 HDI. I was somewhat perturbed by the diesel like sound when the engine was cold, but that apparently is normal for that engine.

I should add that it seemed to have good performance to me, but then I wasn't able to really push it. Noisier at speed than our car though.

apparently the engine was rushed through testing (peugeout dealer)

Based on what evidence??
