VW Tdi 110 loosing power - dieselnut
My son bought a 97 Passat with one of the above Tdi engines.
After a few weeks he noticed that hard acceleration above 3000
revs caused the engine to suddenly loose power & go into limp home mode.
This problem has been well documented on this forum. Fixes have ranged from split vacuum pipes, faulty airflow meters, loose air pipes & new turbo's.
I checked everything except the turbo on this car & in the end decided the problem must lie either with the ECU or turbo.
I came accross this info on the web which may be helpfull to others - www.technologie-entwicklung.de/Gasturbines/VNT15-T...l .
The turbo came off fairly easy which surprised me as all the bolts get exhaust temperature hot. Some are fairly inaccsible so it was just as well. But to cut a long story short, cleaning out the adjuster mechanism did cure the problem completely.
Having now seen the difference between a working/stuck turbo mechanism, just watch the adjuster rod from the vacuum canister on the turbo. Run the engine at tickover & disconnect the vacuum pipe to this canister, if the rod moves less than 0.5 inches the adjuster mech in the turbo will be jamed.
It's a bit of a pain to do the job, but at least a no cost fix.

WOW! What a webpage! "Awesome" as our friends from over the pond would say.

Very interesting, I've learnt something tonight.

The clickable url in your post needs editing to loose the final full stop to make it work - Where's Dave!? {Coo eee, I'm here!! Full stop moved to make the link clickable. DD}

More to the point, where's the edit button? ;)

Good job dieselnut! Have you thought of posting the story and the link to Freds? I'd do it but I think you ought to take the credit for this. Freds have a library of remedies for the TDI, although I haven't seen anything there that is quite as clear as the illustrations by Herr Baumgart, particularly the animated vanes!

Never having had my hands on a turbo before, I hadn't realised you could partly dismantle one without disturbing its ballance.
So the illustrations give you the confidence to tackle the job.
I will get a log-on for Freds tdiclub and put a post up.
